The Global Merchant and Network Services Technology (GMNST) organization at American Express is responsible for modernizing the payments network to enable next-generation payments products. The team creates flexible merchant platforms to acquire, bill, pay, service and foster innovation, while enabling a payments ecosystem to connect and authenticate parties seamlessly and securely

American Express is making strategic investments in new card network products and platforms to allow the company to meet its ambitious global growth agenda. Card Network platform is a distributed near real time low latency system that is always available and highly resilient, processing transactions from around the world 24x7, 365 days a year. American Express Global Card Network Platform authorizes and processes all of the company’s customer card transactions.

American Express is seeking a Senior Technical Program Manager for the Global Network technology team. This role leverages technical knowledge to drive delivery of multi-disciplinary programs across technical, regulatory, and business requirements--from beginning to end. Translates business objectives into execution strategy. Anticipates, tracks, and resolves risks, dependencies, and impediments to project delivery.

How will you make an impact in this role?

The Senior Technical Program Manager is responsible for managing the team’s capacity as they contribute to capabilities to improve operations and product features across the portfolio, as well as ensuring that delivery requirements, timelines, dependencies and risks are clearly communicated to all stakeholders. This position works closely with product owners, architects, engineers and quality assurance across multiple scrum teams and products, acting as a single point of contact for the team, and assisting in generating new partnerships / consulting engagements.

Responsibilities:

  • Drives integrated teams, driving technology and business solutions in support of key product initiatives by working closely with product owners, architects, engineers, and quality assurance.
  • Work within and across tech and business units to prioritize, plan and execute the development schedule for new capabilities
  • Embraces SDLC methods, SAFe Agile values, concepts, principles, and practices. Maintain dependency plan between planned sprints; organize and facilitate daily stand-ups and retrospectives at the end of each sprint
  • Manage and track team velocity, financials and other KPIs in relation to the plan and published progress reports
  • Facilitate discussions to identify alternative or different approaches to solve problems, break down barriers and drive resolution of conflicts to ensure productivity of team.
  • Steer and deliver project communications within Technology and business to ensure transparency of development process and project performance, to coordinate critical issues and issue resolution, to facilitate decision making and to build trust.
  • Create an environment of continuous improvement through reflective conversation and regular retrospectives, with the goal to surface issues/concerns to identify clear action steps.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the teams work across multiple engineering, infrastructure and third parties
  • Manage and appropriately escalate delivery impediments, risks, issues and changes tied to the team’s capability development initiatives
  • Creates both business and tech-facing materials to clearly illustrate the teams work, beyond technical documentation

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 7+ years of technical project management experience
  • Experience managing Agile, Scrum, or other rapid application development teams to deliver technology solutions on that meet customer expectations for timeliness and quality
  • Experience managing project/program budgets and reporting while ensuring compliance with Rally and Agile delivery platform
  • Experience in stakeholder management

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PMI/Scrum/SAFe certifications
  • Ability to think with an Automation Mindset and proactively drive greater efficiencies
  • Ability to effectively interpret technical and business objectives and challenges, and articulate solutions
  • Ability to think abstractly and deal with ambiguous/under-defined problems
  • Deep understanding of all aspects of software design with a demonstrated track record of increasing responsibility
  • Experience with Payments domain
  • Driving results and collaborating in a cross-functional and global environment
