Lead the Technical Agenda for a Major Regional Materials Business

Every road you drive on, every foundation poured and every highway resurfaced starts with a question of quality. Is the stone right, is the mix right, will it last? This is a senior technical leadership role for someone who knows those questions matter, and who also knows that the answers belong in the boardroom as much as the laboratory.

The Business and the Moment

Our client is one of the UK's leading construction materials producers, part of a global building materials group. Its regional business across the South West and Wales employs more than 500 people across quarries, asphalt plants, readymix concrete and road surfacing operations, from Mid Wales to Hampshire and Dorset. The business has recently brought its surfacing contracting teams together with its materials operations, creating one of the most complete quarry-to-road operations in the region, and it needs a technical leader who can make the most of that.

The Role

As Senior Technical Manager you will lead the regional aggregates and asphalt technical team of 28, including quality managers, technical managers, a technical systems manager and technical coordinators supporting road surfacing, together with a UKAS accredited asphalt laboratory. You will report to the Regional Managing Director and sit on the regional leadership team, where your voice is expected on the whole business and not only on product.

You will set the regional technical strategy and deliver it: product conformity and UKCA certification, laboratory performance, recycled asphalt and binder optimisation, value added products, and technical solutions and pavement design for major bids. You will be the technical face of the business to customers, highway engineers and local authorities, and you will lead a safety-first culture where your people grow into the next generation of technical leaders.

Who You Are

You are an experienced technical leader from aggregates, asphalt or a closely related heavy materials background, with deep knowledge of aggregate and asphalt specifications and the standards behind them. You lead through other managers comfortably and you have a record of delivering financial, quality and safety targets. You are commercially minded and you enjoy customers. You bring grit rather than theory, you can hold your own in a leadership team without needing to win every argument, and you get more satisfaction from developing a strong team than from being the cleverest person in the room. Membership of the Institute of Asphalt Technology or the Institute of Quarrying will strengthen your application.

The Reward

A basic salary of up to £80000 and a bonus of up to 25% whose business element has paid in full for many years, taking cash earnings to around £(phone number removed). Location and Travel

Flexible base near Bristol or in South Wales, with easy access from Bristol, Newport, Cardiff, Bridgend, Gloucester, Weston-super-Mare, Bath and the surrounding areas. Regular travel across the region is part of the role.
