Job summary

Elsevier is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help build Document Intelligence capabilities for the Submission and Editorial platform. You will craft cloud-based services that transform manuscripts into structured data, supporting AI-driven features and smarter editorial workflows.

In this role you’ll work across AWS, event-driven architectures, and modern DevOps practices, collaborating with stakeholders to deliver scalable, secure solutions and mentoring teammates along the way.

Qualifications

• Proficiency in Python and Java; Spring/Spring Boot; SQL; willingness to learn others.
• Experience with distributed/event-driven systems using Kafka and AWS services.
• Experience with build tools, Git, and CI (GitHub Actions/Jenkins).
• Collaborative, able to mentor teammates and contribute to agile practices.
• Familiar with monitoring/logging tools (New Relic/OpenSearch/Kibana).
• Proficient with IDEs (IntelliJ/VSCode) and refactoring tools.
• Knowledge of Docker/Kubernetes and cloud design patterns.
• Exposure to AI coding tools (Copilot/Claude/Codex/antigravity).

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy cloud-hosted distributed applications.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to capture requirements in a fast-moving environment.
• Influence architecture for stability and performance.
• Own services across their lifecycle including observability and ops.
• Support and mentor team members to share knowledge.
• Implement test-driven development and modern testing libraries.
