Job summary

TRG Screen is seeking a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer (Java) to join our engineering team in Belfast. You will design, develop, and evolve backend services and frontend applications across our enterprise product suite—a hands‑on role blending new feature development with modernising complex, established codebases.

As an AI‑driven engineering organisation, this role expects you to use AI tooling by default across the full development lifecycle, from design to testing and deployment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of strong Java experience in enterprise or large-scale backend systems.
• Experience with complex, established codebases.
• Knowledge of relational databases and ORM frameworks.
• Clean code principles, design patterns, and testing practices.
• Familiarity with Git, Docker, and cloud platforms (AWS or Azure).
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend systems and frontend applications, including modernisation of complex, established codebases.
• Participate in the full SDLC — requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and post-release support.
• Operate independently on complex tasks, owning features end‑to‑end from design through to deployment.
• Participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback and ensuring adherence to clean code principles.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex software issues, including performance and scalability challenges.
• Use AI tooling as standard practice across design, implementation, code review, and testing to improve quality and delivery speed.
• Contribute to architecture discussions and technical decision‑making.
• Apply clean code principles and design patterns to deliver maintainable, scalable systems.
• Champion automated testing practices and contribute to system reliability, performance, and security.
• Actively adopt AI‑driven development practices and contribute to their adoption within the team.
• Produce technical documentation including design specifications and runbooks.
• Collaborate effectively with product managers, QA, UX designers, and other stakeholders.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team knowledge sharing.
• Contribute to team knowledge through pairing and documentation.
• Communicate clearly on technical topics with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
• Participate in sprint planning, estimation, and continuous process improvement.

The Role

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Knowledge of relational databases and ORM frameworks.
• Solid understanding of clean code principles, design patterns, and testing practices.
• Familiarity with Git, Docker, and cloud platforms (AWS or Azure).
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams.

Preferred

• Exposure to microservices architecture and API design.
• Experience with messaging systems (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, NATS).
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
• Experience using AI‑driven development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to enhance productivity and code quality.
• Familiarity with spec‑driven development — using structured specifications to guide AI coding agents and validate generated output (e.g., BMAD, GitHub Spec‑Kit).
• Familiarity with financial services or research technology domains.
