Job summary

Metropolitan Police is seeking a Senior Software Developer to join its Counter Terrorism Policing HQ function. You will deliver secure, test‑driven code in a collaborative, Agile DevSecOps environment, mentoring peers and building reusable libraries.

Based in Birmingham or West London, with the option to work from home, you will work across modern stacks (Angular/.NET/TypeScript), Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines to strengthen critical systems that protect public safety.

Qualifications

  • Experience of software development in an Agile DevSecOps environment.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Stack includes .NET, Angular, TypeScript).
  • Knowledge of CI/CD and automated testing is desirable.
  • Excellent written communication and ability to document code clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Write clean, secure code following a test-driven approach.
  • Create reusable code libraries and open-by-default code.
  • Mentor other developers and provide technical leadership.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers and QA to deliver projects.
  • Drive CI/CD improvements and automation.

Job description

Salary: £52,000 - 92,000 per year

Requirements:
  • Experience of software application development and coding skills, preferably in an Agile DevSecOps environment.
  • Competence in at least one modern programming language; we use .net, Angular, and Typescript, but we do not require proficiency in our stack.
  • Working knowledge of containers such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm.
  • Database skills in a modern RDBMS such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or MySQL.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using plain language and simplify technical information appropriately for the audience.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with strong scientific report-writing skills and experience documenting code.
  • Experience and knowledge of Government Security Classifications levels and an understanding of the Cabinet Office Security Policy Framework is desirable.
  • Knowledge of unit testing and automated testing tools as part of a continuous integration pipeline is desirable.
  • A keen desire to cross-train into DevSecOps infrastructure skills is desirable.
  • English language required.
Responsibilities:

  • Build future-proof reusable code libraries that can be shared to drive efficiencies throughout the team.
  • Work with other disciplines, including product managers, designers, and QA engineers, to understand project requirements, provide technical insights, and ensure successful delivery.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities for process optimisation, automation, and productivity enhancement.
  • Maintain an understanding of the whole system and teach this to others.
  • Understand and apply security checks and gates within a CI/CD process.
  • Lead and mentor other software developers by providing guidance, support, and technical leadership throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Work with an agile mindset and thrive in collaborative teams.
  • Use strong git and issue tracking skills.
  • Maintain commitment to code quality and best practices, including writing automated tests and conducting code reviews.

We are Counter Terrorism Policing Headquarters (CTPHQ), and we are hiring a Senior Software Developer to help develop existing systems and shape the future of Counter Terrorism Police systems. This is a full-time permanent Band M role based in Birmingham or West Brompton, London, with the flexibility to work from home and from our air-conditioned operations centre east of Birmingham or our London office. The starting salary is 63,409, including allowances totalling 3,009, with annual progression up to 65,886.
