Senior Scientist (Characterization)

An exciting opportunity for an ambitious Senior Scientist with Protein Characterisation (RP, SEC, icIEF) and/or Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) experience to join our team at Lonza. Based in Slough (UK), this role is pivotal to our ongoing success and growth. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for planning and executing analytical testing on therapeutic proteins to support product Characterisation and Biocomparability studies for our customers.

You will collaborate with peers across teams to ensure meticulous project execution and identify improvements to our standard procedures. This role offers an outstanding chance to contribute to significant scientific advancements.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Independently plan and execute analytical assays such as HPLC methods, electrophoresis, LC/MS methods, and higher-order structure techniques to characterise biologics products.
  2. Perform assays focusing on safety, quality, timeliness, and accuracy, adhering to regulatory requirements where applicable.
  3. Complete and peer-review laboratory documentation.
  4. Maintain analytical equipment, technologies, and systems supporting characterisation stages.
  5. Communicate progress and escalate challenges to the Line Manager or study director as appropriate.
  6. Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues effectively and promptly.
  7. Provide practical training and participate in scientific discussions.
  8. Join the out-of-hours call-out rota to respond to alarms on cold storage units.
Key Requirements:
  • Practical industry experience in a relevant laboratory environment including HPLC, LC-MS, and electrophoresis.
  • Experience in using and troubleshooting a range of analytical equipment.
  • Theoretical knowledge of protein chemistry and regulatory requirements for characterisation and biochemical comparability studies.
  • Ability to analyse data, interpret results, and perform root cause analyses.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, mentoring others as needed.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for customer interactions and training.
  • Ability to draft protocols, reports, and SOPs.
