The Role:

As the Senior SACT Nurse, you are responsible for delivering chemotherapy nursing services to patients within the unit and deputising for the line manager where required. This is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact and develop your career.

What You'll Do:

  1. Provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis and through all stages of treatment.
  2. Ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence-based nursing care for patients undergoing chemotherapy, assessing health, health-related, and nursing needs of patients, their families, and other carers by identifying and initiating appropriate steps for effective care. This includes managing a patient caseload, close liaison with medical consultants, ordering diagnostic tests within agreed parameters, and running nurse-led clinics.
  3. Work autonomously whilst providing clinical leadership, ensuring all patients have an accurate plan of care, reflecting the assessment undertaken and incorporating the issues and recommendations made, with clear documentation in the patient’s records.
  4. Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in intravenous access, management of central venous catheters, venepuncture, and chemotherapy delivery, including management of anaphylaxis and extravasation.

What You'll Have:

Experience and skills:

  1. Experience in intravenous drug administration.
  2. Experience in chemotherapy administration.
  3. Sufficient post-registration nursing experience in oncology or a related specialty to be confident and competent in required skills.
  4. Ability to work accurately and reliably under pressure.
  5. Ability to make decisions, organise, and prioritise.
  6. Experience and competence in blood transfusion and bone marrow biopsies.

Qualifications and Knowledge:

  1. NMC Registered Nurse.
  2. UKONS SACT Passport or to be completed within three months of appointment.
  3. Fully trained and qualified in venepuncture and cannulations, with experience working with different types of central venous access devices.
  4. Willingness to train towards a recognised chemotherapy qualification.
  5. UKONs trained with experience in oncology telephone triage, recognition, and management of neutropenic sepsis.
