Job summary

Herefordshire Council is seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer to lead the Road Safety and Traffic Engineering team. You will provide expert guidance to officers, councillors, and partners on traffic regulation orders and policy, and oversee delivery of traffic management projects.

You will work collaboratively across council services and with external partners to improve highway safety and network performance, using data-led approaches to deliver safer streets.

Qualifications

• Degree level in Engineering or related field required.
• ICE membership or Chartered/ Incorporated status preferred.
• Extensive knowledge of highway legislation (Highways Act 1980, etc.).
• Experience in a management role and driving service improvements.
• Knowledge of road safety techniques and casualty reduction schemes.
• Proficient with AutoCAD and associated packages.
• Able to organise own workload and lead a team.

What will you be doing? In this role, you will work as a senior member of staff in our Road Safety and Traffic Engineering team, providing expert technical advice to officers, councillors, partners and stakeholders. You will take a leading role in the development, implementation and review of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs), helping to shape policy and ensure that traffic management measures support the Council's wider transport, safety and place shaping objectives. You will lead and develop a small team of Traffic Engineers, providing clear direction, technical guidance and direct line management support to ensure the successful delivery of programmes and projects. Working collaboratively across Council services and with external partners, you will oversee the design and implementation of traffic management and road safety initiatives, using data and evidence led approaches to improve highway safety, network performance and the travelling experience for all road users.

• Be educated to degree level or equivalent in Engineering, or a related field and/or substantial work experience.
• Will hold ICE membership or other relevant professional body and accredited with either Chartered or Incorporated Status.
• Have comprehensive knowledge of key highway legislation including the Highways Act 1980, Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, Road Traffic Act 1991, Traffic Management Act 2004 etc.
• Have experience in a management role and have a can-do attitude, with the desire to bring about significant service improvements.
• Have knowledge / experience of road safety and traffic engineering techniques including casualty reduction schemes and Traffic Regulation Orders.
• Be competent using AutoCAD associated packages i.e. Signplot, KeyLINE, KeySIGN.
• Have the ability to organise your own workload and to also help organise the work of the team.
