Job summary

AECOM in Birmingham seeks an experienced Principal Rail Telecommunications Engineer to lead design, assurance, delivery and support of telecoms across major rail projects. You will shape telecoms strategy, manage interfaces, mentor engineers, and engage with clients and stakeholders.

This senior role requires degree in engineering, strong rail telecoms knowledge, FTN/FTNx, fibre, IP, GSM-R, and experience in rail environments. Hybrid working with office days and onboarding support is offered.

Qualifications

• Degree/HNC/HND in Telecommunications, Electronic, Electrical or related Engineering discipline.
• Significant experience in rail telecommunications engineering.
• Strong knowledge of FTN/FTNx, fibre optics, IP networking, GSM-R, CCTV, PA, CIS, and telecoms transmission systems.
• Experience working within Network Rail or major rail infrastructure environments.
• Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration is desirable.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead telecoms design and engineering activities across the project lifecycle.
• Provide technical assurance, design review, and engineering governance.
• Support the delivery of telecoms renewals, enhancements, and digital railway programmes.
• Manage technical risks, interfaces, and system integration activities.
• Mentor junior engineers and support professional development.
• Engage with clients, contractors, and key stakeholders.
