Job summary

Fortem Cares is hiring a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our Projects division in Bristol. You will lead commercial management for a £16m retrofit refurbishment across four high-rise buildings, handling invoicing, cost control, and subcontractor procurement.

The role requires strong contract knowledge, negotiation and accounting experience, plus a willingness to travel if required. A close-knit, experienced team and flexible onsite work arrangements are offered.

Qualifications

• 5 GCSEs at grade C or above and A levels.
• Industry-related qualification required.
• Experience of working on social housing refurbishment contracts.
• Established QS ready for progression.
• KNOWLEDGE of NEC 4 advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Secure the contract entitlement and commercial success.
• Manage commercial aspects of Retrofit social housing refurbishment.
• Promote company values and procedures internally and externally.
• Ensure project teams meet or exceed budget targets.
• Act as SME on contractual arrangements.
• Maximise cash flow through invoicing and resolving client queries.
• Monitor job costs and revenue for data-driven decisions.
• Manage disputes and identify issues early.
• Ensure accurate cash flow forecasts and revenue profiles.
• Direct responsibility for financial reporting and cost control governance.
• Produce subcontractor orders and supplier onboarding.
• Join a small but exceptional team of commercial professionals.
• Some flexible working available (3 days per week onsite).

Job description

As part of our continued growth, we are looking for a motivated and professional Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our Projects division. This is a permanent, full time position and is based in Bristol. The Senior QS will have a key role in our commercial management function, providing proactive and timely support.

The Customer

This will be working within our recently secured contract in partnership with Bristol City Council, delivering a £16m Retrofit refurbishment project across 4 high rise buildings which will include scaffolding mass climbers, cladding renewals and associated works.

Duties and Responsibilities

Senior Quantity Surveyor responsibilities will include:

• Ensure the company secures its full entitlement within the contract.
• Be responsible for the commercial aspects of this newly acquired Retrofit social housing refurbishment contract.
• Promote company values and procedures internally and externally.
• Ensure project teams meet or exceed budget targets.
• Act as a subject matter expert on contractual arrangements.
• Maximise cash flow through invoicing and resolving client queries.
• Monitor job costs and revenue to support data-driven decisions.
• Manage disputes and identify potential issues early.
• Ensure accurate cash flow forecasts and revenue profiles.
• Direct responsibility for financial reporting and cost control governance.
• Producing subcontractor orders, supplier on-boarding, and team development.
• This is a small but exceptional and friendly team of dedicated and experienced commercial individuals.
• Some flexible working available (3 days per week onsite).

What You Will Need

• Good level of education to include 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above, A levels
• An industry related qualification
• We would consider an established QS ready for the next step
• Experience of working on Social Housing Refurbishment contracts
• Previous experience within a similar role
• Excellent IT knowledge including a high level of Excel skills (incl. V-Lookup, Pivot tables and formula development)
• Contractual awareness
• Negotiating and communication skills
• Experience of Management Accounts
• Full UK driving licence and a willingness to travel if required by the business.
• Knowledge of Contract Law
• Detailed knowledge of relevant contract conditions (NEC 4).
• Retrofit refurbishment experience would be advantageous
• Professional Accountancy Qualifications or working towards Facilities Management/Accountancy or Construction related qualification.
• Demonstrable experience in significant & complex contract multi-disciplinary contracts.
• Experience in Dispute Resolution
• Experience within the construction or social housing refurbishment sector however we are very much welcoming applications from established commercial individuals from other sectors.
