Job summary

McLaughlin & Harvey is seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our commercial team on high‑value UK projects. You will manage cost planning, procurement, subcontractor engagement, and payments, while guiding a commercial team and ensuring alignment with site operations.

The role requires a degree, extensive construction experience, and strong knowledge of JCT/NEC contracts. A proactive mindset, excellent negotiation skills, and a willingness to travel are essential.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in construction projects is required.
• Strong understanding of JCT and NEC contract forms.
• Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
• Proactive, responsible, and able to work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, negotiate and analyse project costs and budgets.
• Ensure subcontractors are pre-qualified and manage procurement.
• Certify sub-contractor interim payments and issue notices.
• Advise on contractual issues and manage commercial risks.
• Produce monthly Cost Value Reconciliations and maintain relationships with teams.

What you will be doing

• Preparing, negotiating and analysing costs for budgets.
• Ensure sub-contractors are pre-qualified in accordance with management systems.
• Procurement of Sub-Contractors and preparation of Sub-Contractor order documentation.
• Assessing and certification of sub-contractor interim payments and ensuring required Payer / Pay-less notices as issued.
• Advising on a range of legal and contractual issues and identification and management of commercial risks.
• Production and presentation of monthly Cost Value Reconciliation on projects.
• Establish, maintain and enhance effective working relationships.
• Plan, allocate and evaluate work carried out by teams, individuals and self.
• Assist in managing the Commercial team and supervise and mentor Quantity Surveyors.
• Ensure effective interaction between the commercial and operational site teams.

• Extensive experience in Construction
• Proactive approach, take Initiative and willingness to accept responsibility
• Good knowledge of construction contracts particularly the JCT & NEC Forms of Contract
• Sound Commercial Awareness
• Ability to complete take offs and price variations unaided
• Excellent communication & negotiation skills
• High levels of organisational skills and time management
• Excellent numerical, IT and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work on initiative with minimum supervision
• A full driving licence
• Ability to travel to site, as and when required
