Job summary

Skilled Careers is seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor for a well-established national main contractor delivering refurbishment and new build schemes. You will work with site teams to manage commercial delivery, with responsibilities across two smaller schemes up to £5m and one larger project, in a design and build environment.

The role requires proven experience in JCT contracts, mentoring junior staff, producing reports and value engineering to maximise cost efficiency.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Senior Quantity Surveyor on £10m+ projects.
• Experience mentoring Quantity Surveyors.
• Expertise in package procurement and management on high‑value, complex scopes.

Responsibilities

• Managing commercial aspects of two smaller schemes (up to £5m) and one larger scheme.
• Support pre-construction with tender documents, contracts and procurement schedules.
• Full management of accounts from procurement through to final accounting.
• Assess subcontractor progress and budget compliance.
• Undertake valuations and client variations.
• Produce internal and external financial reports, forecasts and liabilities.
• Supervise, support and mentor junior team members.
• Identify opportunities to maximise value and reduce costs.
• Highlight risks and develop mitigation strategies.
• Advise on contractual claims and disputes throughout the project lifecycle.

The company:

A well established national main contractor delivering refurbishment and new build schemes procured through design & build contracts. Projects range from minor £2m schemes up to £20m major works contracts.

The role:

We are seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor with a strong background in main contracting with proven experience in managing the commercial delivery of design and build projects. Working with site based project teams, your responsibilities as Senior Quantity Surveyor may include:

• Managing the commercial aspects of 2 smaller schemes (up to £5m in value) and a single larger scheme.


• Supporting the pre-construction team in preparing tender documents, contracts and procurement schedules to support driving PCSA activities.


• Full management of accounts from procurement through to final accounting.


• Assessing subcontractor progress and budget compliance.


• Undertaking valuations and client variations


• Producing accurate internal and external financial reports, forecasts and liabilities


• Supervising, supporting and mentoring junior team members


• Identifying opportunities to maximise value and reduce costs


• Highlighting risks and developing mitigation strategies


• Advising on contractual claims and disputes throughout the project lifecycle

Requirements:

• Proven experience as a Senior Quantity Surveyor on projects valued at £10m+


• Experience of managing and mentoring Quantity Surveyors previously


• Demonstrable expertise in package procurement and management across high‑value, complex scopes


• Proficiency with JCT contracts


• Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline or RICS accredited


• Strong written and verbal communication skills


• Proactive, commercially focused mindset with a keen eye for detail and risk


• Excellent negotiation skills


• Comfortable working on your own initiative
