Job summary

The Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade (BIST) is recruiting a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to design, build and operate reliable, scalable platform services in Birmingham. You will work with multidisciplinary teams to provide observability, tooling and CI/CD support ensuring services are resilient and performant.

You will spend time hands-on coding in Python and managing cloud infrastructure, while mentoring peers and improving security, resilience and deployment

Qualifications

• Experience designing,building and running reliable, scalable platform services.
• Strong capability with observability, monitoring and incident handling.
• Proven track record applying SRE practices, SLIs/SLOs and error budgets.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain shared service products enabling developers to be more efficient.
• Write clean, well-tested Python code for platform tooling and services.
• Improve platform tooling, monitoring, logging, metrics, dashboards and CI/CD pipelines.
• Develop and maintain cloud infrastructure using IaC (Terraform).
• Support teams to adopt SRE practices, including SLIs/SLOs and error budgets.
• Contribute to observability across services to understand performance and user impact.
• Enhance CI/CD pipelines for safe, frequent deployments.
• Collaborate with product, delivery and architecture to meet user needs.
• Support live service operations including incident response and problem management.
• Mentor colleagues and contribute to an inclusive engineering community.
