Job summary

AECOM in Birmingham is seeking a Principal Protection & Control Design Engineer to sit at the heart of a varied portfolio, including National Grid's Great Grid Upgrade. You will spearhead protection and control design for HV/EHV substations, prepare engineering deliverables, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and ensure compliance with client specs and international standards.

You’ll mentor junior engineers, help shape technical standards and digital delivery in the P&C space,

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Excellent protection schemes knowledge for transmission/distribution.
• Experience with protective relays from Siemens, GE, ABB/Hitachi, Schneider or SEL.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and MS Office.
• Experience on UK/international utility projects.
• Ability to deliver complete Protection & Control packages independently.
• Knowledge of IEC 61850 and substation automation.

Responsibilities

• Prepare Protection & Control designs for HV/EHV substations (11kV-400kV+).
• Develop SLDs, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams and interconnection diagrams.
• Design protection and control panels and RTU/SCADA interfaces.
• Prepare relay settings philosophy and coordinate with studies.
• Perform protection coordination and relay configuration reviews.
• Carry out cable sizing, voltage drop and battery sizing calculations.
• Coordinate with Civil, Primary, Telecom and SCADA teams.
• Review vendor drawings for compliance with specs.
• Engage with clients to provide technical direction and value engineering.
• Support FAT, SAT, commissioning and issue resolution.
• Drive project execution, manage risks and QA.
• Ensure IEC, IEEE, National Grid and client standards compliance.
• Mentor team members and support capability growth in cable systems.
• Assist business development with proposals and client presentations.
