Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Principal Protection & Control Design Engineer in the UK to lead HV/EHV protection design across diverse projects. You will develop SLDs, relay and panel designs, and interface with SCADA/RTU systems, while adhering to IEC/IEEE standards.

The role offers a hybrid working model from Birmingham and opportunities to mentor colleagues, participate in business development, and contribute to high-profile infrastructure programs.

Qualifications

• Excellent knowledge of protection schemes for Transmission and Distribution substations.
• Proficiency with protection relays from Siemens, GE, ABB/Hitachi Energy, Schneider Electric, or SEL.
• Knowledge of IEC 61850 and substation automation systems.
• Ability to independently deliver complete Protection & Control engineering packages.

Responsibilities

• Prepare Protection & Control designs for HV/EHV substations (11kV-400kV+).
• Develop SLDs, AC/DC Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, Terminal Plans, Cable Schedules, and Interconnection Diagrams.
• Design Protection Relay Panels, Control Panels, and RTU/SCADA interfaces.
• Prepare relay settings philosophy and coordinate with system studies.
• Coordinate with Civil, Primary, Telecom and SCADA teams.
• Review vendor drawings for compliance with project specifications.
• Engage with clients and stakeholders, providing technical assurance and value engineering.
• Support FAT, SAT, commissioning and issue resolution.
• Drive project execution, manage risks, interfaces and quality reviews.
• Ensure designs comply with IEC, IEEE, National Grid and client standards.
• Mentor team members and support capability growth.
• Assist business development with proposals and client presentations.
