Job summary

Join AECOM’s Transmission and Distribution team as a Principal Protection & Control Design Engineer in the UK. You’ll lead protection and control design for HV/EHV substations, develop SLDs and I/O diagrams, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure client specs and international standards are met.

You’ll contribute to technical standards, innovation, and digital delivery while mentoring teammates and supporting business development in a dynamic, hybrid work setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
• Excellent knowledge of protection schemes for HV/ substations.
• Experience with protection relays from Siemens, GE, ABB/Hitachi, Schneider, or SEL.
• Knowledge of IEC 61850 and substation automation systems.
• Familiarity with SCADA, RTU, SAS and communication protocols.
• Strong communication, coordination and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepare protection and control designs for HV/EHV substations (11kV-400kV+).
• Develop SLDs, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams and interconnection diagrams.
• Design protection, control, annunciation, metering panels and RTU/SCADA interfaces.
• Prepare relay settings philosophy and coordinate with system studies.
• Perform protection coordination and relay configuration reviews.
• Carry out engineering calculations including cable sizing and voltage drop.
• Coordinate with Civil, Primary, Telecom and SCADA teams.
• Review vendor drawings for project compliance.
• Engage with clients, provide technical assurance and value-engineered solutions.
• Support FAT, SAT, commissioning and issue resolution; drive project execution.
• Ensure designs comply with IEC/IEEE/National Grid standards; mentor team.
