Job summary

Precision People is recruiting for a Senior Process Engineer in Burton Latimer to own CNC machining processes, tool up parts from drawings, and drive NPI activities. The role offers a path toward an Engineering Manager position and requires hands-on programming and process definition across multiple CNC controls.

You will quote and estimate for the commercial team, develop process layouts, and support maintenance with strong problem-solving and SPC capability.

Qualifications

• Proven CNC machining process engineering experience.
• Able to write Fanuc-based ISO (G-code) programs manually and/or with CAM.
• Hands-on prove-out of CNC programs on multiple machine controls.
• Experience quoting and estimating machined parts including cycle times and tooling.
• Working knowledge of engineering drawings and GD&T.
• Competent with CAD/CAM software and tooling selection.

Responsibilities

• Work with 2D/3D design software and customer models to define processes.
• Generate Fanuc ISO CNC programs manually and with CAM software.
• Prove out and run programs on various CNC controls, including milling.
• Manage timing plans, budgets and project goals.
• Produce control plans, FMEAs and define capability requirements.
• Prepare cycle time estimates, tooling costs and equipment proposals.
• Carry out root cause analysis and 8D actions for issues.
• Support maintenance and liaise with subcontractors on repairs.

My client, a well-established manufacturing business, is looking for an experienced CNC Machining Process Engineer to join their team. This role would start as a Senior Process Engineer and then progress into an Engineering Manager role in the future.

You will be the technical lead for machining: the person who turns a customer drawing or model into a costed, tooled and proven process. The role combines four things: quoting and estimating for the Commercial team, hands-on process and CNC programming work, NPI and quality problem solving, and technical support to Maintenance.

Alternative job titles include Manufacturing Engineer and NPI Engineer. This role is commutable from Kettering, Desborough, Wellingborough, Northampton, Corby and Market Harborough.

Key Responsibilities - CNC Process Engineer

• Work with 2D and 3D design software (e.g. AutoCAD, Hypermill) and customer-supplied models
• Generate Fanuc-based ISO CNC programs manually and/or with CAM software
• Prove out and run programs hands-on across a variety of CNC control systems
• Manage timing plans, project goals and budgets
• Produce Control Plans and FMEAs and define capability requirements
• Interpret engineering drawings, specifications and tolerances (GD&T)
• Select and procure cutting tools; design or procure special-purpose, multi-function cutting tools in partnership with tooling suppliers
• Specify and procure hydraulic and manual workholding and fixtures
• Produce tooling data, process layouts and drawings
• Specify and procure ancillary process equipment (washing, pressure testing, assembly)
• Prepare cycle time estimates, tooling costs and dedicated equipment proposals for the Commercial department, including labour requirements and capacity analysis
• Cost fixtures, gauges and ancillary operations such as washing, pressure testing and painting
• Carry out root cause analysis and complete permanent 8D corrective actions for customer issues
• Understand SPC capability requirements and results, and interpret CMM reports
• Identify cycle time reductions, better labour deployment, tool life improvements and process capability gains
• Support the Maintenance team, including liaison with maintenance sub-contractors and costing of repairs
• Advise on capital expenditure by preparing quotes and recommendations (decisions sit with senior management)

Skills & Experience Required - NPI Engineer

• Proven CNC machining process engineering experience
• Able to write Fanuc-based ISO (G-code) programs manually and/or with CAM
• Hands-on prove-out of CNC programs on a variety of machine control systems (Milling experience essential)
• Experience quoting and estimating machined parts: cycle times, tooling, fixtures and labour
• Working knowledge of engineering drawings and GD&T
• Competent with 2D and 3D CAD/CAM software
• NPI and APQP experience, including timing plans, Control Plans and FMEA
• Root cause analysis and 8D corrective actions for customer issues
• Working understanding of SPC and capability, and CMM results
• Detailed understanding of hydraulic and manual workholding and fixture design
• Competent selection and deployment of cutting tools, and experience working with tooling suppliers on special tools
