Job summary

Siemens Energy UK Grid Technologies seeks a Senior Principal Engineer to lead a team of engineers delivering high-quality primary engineering designs for UK transmission substations, supporting renewable grid connections.

You will balance technical leadership with collaboration with clients, project managers, civil teams and other engineering leads, overseeing progress, resolving issues, and ensuring safety, quality, budget and programme commitments.

Qualifications

• Degree in electrical engineering.
• Extensive primary engineering design experience in Electricity Transmission and Distribution in the UK, 5+ years as lead design engineer.
• Solid knowledge of grid connection requirements, constraints and technologies.
• Familiarity with Transmission and Distribution standards and Health & Safety standards (CDM).

Responsibilities

• Lead a team to deliver primary engineering designs for UK substations.
• Chair design reviews and approve primary designs within the department.
• Coordinate with clients, project management, civil teams and interfaces to meet delivery timescales and budget.
• Ensure design risk assessments/HAZIDs are in place and residual risks documented in the HS file.

As a Senior Principal Engineer within Siemens Energy's UK Grid Technologies business, your day will be centred on leading and guiding a team of engineers to deliver high-quality primary engineering designs for UK transmission operator substations, particularly in support of renewable grid connections. You'll balance technical leadership with collaboration - working closely with clients, project managers, civil teams, and fellow engineering leads - while overseeing progress, resolving issues, and ensuring designs meet safety, quality, budget, and programme requirements. Reporting to the Head of Primary Engineering (UK), you'll play a visible role in technical meetings, design reviews, and monthly reporting, while also investing time in coaching and developing your team.

How You'll Make An Impact

• Lead a team to deliver the primary engineering design adhering to the process and the business strategy.
• Hold technical responsibility for primary design on substations, accountable for approving primary engineering design within the department.
• Coordinate with clients, civil teams, project management, and other interfaces to deliver high-quality technical output in line with agreed delivery timescales and budget.
• Ensure design risk assessments/HAZIDs are in place for all design solutions and that residual risks are passed on to the H&S file.
• Chair design reviews to ensure consistency in design and adherence to specifications and processes.

What You'll Bring

• A degree in electrical engineering.
• Extensive primary engineering design experience within the Electricity Transmission and Distribution industry, with at least 5 years in the UK as a lead design engineer.
• Good working knowledge of grid connection requirements, constraints, and technologies.
• Excellent knowledge of technology, product roadmap, and value engineering.
• Fully conversant with the latest Transmission and Distribution standards & technologies and Health & Safety standards (including CDM regulations) applicable to the design of High Voltage substations.
