Job summary

Atlas NextWave is seeking a Senior / Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to lead HVAC and building services designs for major electrical infrastructure projects in Manchester. You will provide technical leadership and direction from concept through construction, ensuring quality, compliance and timely delivery.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering.
• Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
• Strong experience in mechanical building services and HVAC design.
• Experience delivering multidisciplinary engineering projects.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical and HVAC design from concept through construction support.
• Manage mechanical work packages, ensuring quality, compliance, and delivery.
• Prepare and review calculations, specifications, reports, and engineering documentation.
• Provide technical guidance and resolve complex engineering challenges.
• Produce and review HVAC and mechanical building services designs.
• Develop system schematics, equipment selections, and specifications.
• Complete design calculations: heating/cooling loads, ventilation, ductwork/pipe sizing, pressure loss, plant selection.
• Support BIM, CAD, and 3D modelling activities.
• Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, CDM, CIBSE guidance; perform design reviews and risk assessments.
• Support HAZID, HAZOP, and technical risk workshops.
• Work with civil, structural, electrical, controls and fire teams.
• Coordinate with clients, suppliers, contractors, and consultants.

We are seeking a Senior / Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the delivery of mechanical building services and HVAC designs for major electrical infrastructure projects. You will provide technical leadership, manage mechanical work packages, ensure compliance with industry standards, and support multidisciplinary project teams.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Lead mechanical and HVAC design from concept through construction support.


• Manage mechanical work packages, ensuring quality, compliance, and delivery.


• Prepare and review calculations, specifications, reports, and engineering documentation.


• Provide technical guidance and resolve complex engineering challenges.

Design & Project Delivery

• Produce and review HVAC and mechanical building services designs.


• Develop system schematics, equipment selections, and specifications.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering.


• Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or working towards chartership.


• Strong experience in mechanical building services and HVAC design.


• Experience delivering multidisciplinary engineering projects.


• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable

• Experience within critical infrastructure, power, substations, HVDC, industrial facilities, or data centres.


• Knowledge of BIM and digital engineering processes.


• Experience managing suppliers and contractors.
