Job summary

GHD is seeking a Principal Civil Engineer to lead the planning, design and delivery of infrastructure projects from the Leeds or Newcastle office. This client-facing role involves preparing quality bids and managing client relations from outset through delivery and close-out.

Responsibilities include developing innovative engineering solutions, drafting standards, and delivering projects within plans while improving processes and systems.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline; chartered or approaching chartered status.
• Experience: 6–10 years in civil engineering, incl supervision of junior engineers for 7–12 months, highway/infrastructure design and drainage.
• Technical: Advanced design, testing, and regulatory compliance; familiarity with Highways England/DMRB, Water UK Sewerage Sector Guidance, and local guidance; strong software knowledge.
• Core competencies: Decision quality, managing complexity, accountability, process optimisation, communication, planning & alignment.
• Personal traits: Focused, adaptable, confident, composed under pressure with strong interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead planning, design and delivery of infrastructure projects.
• Prepare bids and manage client relationships through delivery and close-out.
• Draft and evaluate engineering standards and specifications.
• Deliver small to medium-scale projects within plans.
• Define and improve processes, equipment and systems to cut costs and raise quality.
• Manage relationships with service providers and contract deliverables.
• Deliver solutions meeting client needs using best-in-class approaches.
• Use established systems to share engineering knowledge.
• Maintain professional accreditation and stay updated on best practices.
• Conduct inspections and recommend remedial actions for compliance.
• Identify and implement process improvements.
• Build relationships with clients and support senior colleagues on key accounts.
