Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is seeking a Senior Planning Engineer based in Leeds to support delivery of major transmission and substation projects across the UK. The role blends office, home and site-based work, contributing to the UK’s Net Zero ambitions while working in a high-performing team.

You will develop and manage fully resourced programmes, lead planning activities across tender and delivery, and mentor junior planners. Strong NEC contract knowledge and advanced planning tools are essential.

Qualifications

• Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or related discipline.
• Experience in planning major infrastructure, utilities, power or energy projects.
• Strong proficiency with planning tools and reporting.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain fully resourced project programmes across lifecycle.
• Lead planning activities across tender, pre-construction and delivery phases.
• Prepare tender programmes and planning strategies for projects.
• Analyse programme performance and implement mitigation measures.

About the role

Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution is currently recruiting for a Senior Planning Engineer to support the successful delivery of major transmission and substation projects across the UK.

Ideally based from our Leeds office at Century Way, this role offers a blend of office, home and site-based working. Working as part of a high-performing team, you will play a critical role in planning and delivering infrastructure that supports the UK's transition to Net Zero.

As a Senior Planning Engineer, you'll be at the heart of major power and energy projects, influencing delivery from concept through to completion. What you'll be doing

As a Senior Planning Engineer, you'll provide planning expertise across the full project lifecycle, working closely with operational, commercial and engineering teams to ensure successful project delivery.

Key responsibilities include:

• Developing, maintaining and managing fully resourced project programmes.


• Leading planning activities across tender, pre-construction and delivery phases.


• Producing and presenting tender programmes and planning strategies.


• Analysing programme performance, identifying risks and opportunities, and implementing mitigation measures.


• Managing change, progress reporting and earned value analysis.
  
• Providing insightful planning reports, dashboards and KPIs to project stakeholders.


• Supporting project teams in achieving programme milestones and contractual requirements.
  
• Mentoring and developing junior planners within the business.


• Driving continuous improvement in planning processes, tools and methodologies.

Who we're looking for

We're keen to hear from experienced planning professionals who can bring strategic thinking, technical expertise and a collaborative approach.

You will ideally have:

• A degree in Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.


• Significant planning experience within major infrastructure, utilities, power or energy projects.


• Advanced proficiency in Primavera P6, Asta Powerproject and associated reporting tools.


• A strong understanding of NEC3/NEC4 contracts.


• Experience in earned value management, QSRA and programme risk management.


• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.


• Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.


• The ability to lead planning activities independently whilst supporting wider project teams.
