Job summary

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is seeking a Senior Planner to lead development and management of detailed project programmes for major UK energy infrastructure. The role requires NEC4 contract knowledge, Primavera P6 proficiency, and coordination with multiple internal teams to ensure on‑time delivery.

You will report to the Project Manager and contribute to framework objectives, with opportunities for progression within a busy energy unit based in Cheshire, UK.

Qualifications

  • Senior Planner with proven delivery of major infrastructure, utilities, energy or substation projects.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC3/NEC4 contracts and programme management requirements.
  • Experience producing and managing complex project schedules with Primavera P6.
  • Experience in National Grid frameworks or regulated utility environments.
  • Solid project controls governance, reporting and risk management abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain and manage detailed project programmes across all delivery stages.
  • Ensure NEC4 compliance and alignment with National Grid milestones.
  • Monitor progress against baselines, identify variances and risks.
  • Conduct critical path analysis and implement mitigation/ recovery plans.
  • Coordinate planning with operations, engineering and commercial teams.
  • Provide planning expertise to support informed decisions and governance.
  • Prepare regular programme reports, dashboards and KPI metrics.

As part of our continued expansion within the energy sector, we are delivering the Ince Substation Project, a Design & Build scheme under the National Grid Electricity Transmission Partnership (ETP) Framework.

Based in Ince, Cheshire, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting the Project Manager and wider project team by leading all planning and scheduling activities throughout the project lifecycle. Working within a collaborative project controls and planning function, you will ensure that programme delivery aligns with contractual obligations, National Grid standards, and key project milestones.

Role Responsibilities

As Senior Planner, you will be responsible for the development, management, and continual improvement of the project programme, ensuring successful delivery in accordance with NEC contract requirements and client expectations.

  • Lead the development, maintenance, and management of detailed project programmes throughout all stages of project delivery.
  • Ensure programmes are compliant with NEC4 contractual requirements, National Grid standards, and project-specific milestones.
  • Monitor and report progress against the approved baseline programme, identifying variances, trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Undertake critical path analysis and develop mitigation and recovery programmes where required.
  • Coordinate planning activities with operational, engineering, commercial, and subcontractor teams to ensure integrated programme delivery.
  • Support project teams with sequencing, resource planning, construction methodologies, and delivery strategies.
  • Prepare and present regular programme reports, dashboards, and performance metrics for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support programme-related contractual matters, including the assessment and management of compensation events and programme submissions.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager to provide planning expertise and support informed project decision‑making.
  • Facilitate planning workshops and programme reviews to ensure alignment across all project stakeholders.
  • Promote planning best practice, consistency of reporting, and continuous improvement within the wider planning function.
  • Contribute to lessons learned activities and support the successful delivery of framework objectives.
Skills, Experience And Qualifications
  • Proven experience in a Senior Planner role delivering major infrastructure, utilities, energy, transmission, or substation projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC3/NEC4 contracts, including programme management requirements and compensation events.
  • Demonstrable experience producing and managing complex project schedules using Primavera P6 or equivalent planning software.
  • Experience working within National Grid frameworks or similar regulated utility environments.
  • Strong understanding of project controls, programme governance, and reporting requirements.
  • Ability to analyse programme performance, identify delivery risks, and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Experience collaborating with operational, commercial, engineering, and subcontractor teams to drive successful project outcomes.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively within a fast‑paced project environment while managing multiple priorities.
  • Previous experience working on National Grid substation projects or within the UK transmission and distribution sector.
  • Familiarity with National Grid procedures, standards, and project delivery processes.
  • Experience in critical path analysis, resource loading, and earned value management techniques.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and construction methodologies, particularly within HV substation environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Working knowledge of project controls and reporting systems such as Power BI, Asta, or similar platforms.
  • Experience supporting tender planning activities, including programme development and methodology reviews.
  • Understanding of commissioning activities, outage planning, and operational constraints within live HV environments.
  • Experience contributing to programme‑level planning across multi‑project frameworks.
  • Previous experience mentoring, coaching, or supporting junior planners.
  • Exposure to digital transformation initiatives within planning, project controls, or reporting functions.

Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground.
