Job summary

Smart Working seeks a Senior PHP/Symfony Engineer to own backend development within a mature Symfony platform handling marketing and revenue data for enterprise customers. You’ll upgrade from Symfony 6.1 to 7, work with Angular, TypeScript, and Python AI microservices, and operate in a remote, cross-functional squad with product, QA and DevOps.

The role emphasizes architecture, independence and a strong focus on performance, scalability and maintainability within a legacy codebase.

Qualifications

8+ years of commercial software engineering experience with at least 5 years in PHP.
7+ years of expert-level PHP development experience.
3+ years with Symfony 6.x/7 and a strong backend focus.
Experience with Laravel or understanding of differences to Symfony.
4+ years in backend architecture, system design and scalability.
2+ years using AI development tools to review AI-generated code.
5+ years of MySQL experience with schema design and query optimization.
1 year working with Angular/TypeScript; React or Vue is a plus.
3+ years automated testing with PHPUnit; Pest or similar acceptable.
2+ years AWS; Azure or GCP experience also considered.

Responsibilities

Own backend development within core Symfony app and deliver independently in 2-3 months.
Review code from team and AI tools; challenge approaches and ensure concerns addressed.
Assist migration from Symfony 6.1 to 7, resolving compatibility and legacy issues.
Improve performance, scalability and maintainability of the application.
Collaborate across Angular front end, TypeScript and Python AI services; work with DevOps.
Read Angular/TypeScript code when needed; senior backend focus remains priority.
Ensure security requirements (SOC 2, PII) are followed consistently.
Operate with high autonomy in a remote, cross-functional squad.
