Job summary

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust seeks a Senior Pharmacy Technician / Dispensary Manager to lead the in-patient dispensing team at Sunderland Royal Hospital and across SKFT sites. You will manage a team of dispensers, technicians and assistants, contributing to 7‑day clinical services and safe medicines utilisation.

The role requires Band 4+ experience, GPhC registration, and strong leadership with a focus on quality and cost-effectiveness.

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services with underpinning knowledge and GPhC registration.
  • Accredited Checking Technician qualification with relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Continued professional development in line with GPhC requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and ensure efficient in-patient dispensing services across sites.
  • Work with pharmacists and trainees to improve efficiency and integration.
  • Develop and monitor standards and conduct audits and research.
  • Participate in managerial meetings and provide staff development.
  • Ensure staffing and cross-cover with partner services as contracted.

Senior Pharmacy Technician / Dispensary Manager

We have an opportunity fora Senior Pharmacy Technician / Dispensary Manager tojoin our in-patient Pharmacy team. You will be based at Sunderland RoyalHospital but be able to work across all our in-patient dispensaries across all of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust sites. The Trust has invested in modern pharmaceutical facilities including fullelectronic prescribing with decision support, automated dispensaries andextensive 7-day clinical services to enhance the patients experience of careby improving the quality, safety and effectiveness of their medicinesutilisation. Main duties of the job

We are looking for a motivated individual who is team-orientatedand shares our passion for improving patient care. You will need to be anexperienced Pharmacy Technician working at Band 4 or above with a relevantpharmaceutical qualification and registered with the General PharmaceuticalCouncil (GPhC). You will also need to be enthusiastic, self-motivated and wellorganised. As Senior Pharmacy Technician / Dispensary Manager you will managea team of dispensers and work alongside our Clinical Pharmacists, PharmacyTechnicians and Pharmacy Dispensing Assistants to provide integratedpharmaceutical care for service users in the Trust, including service level agreement with ourpartner organisation Choice Ltd., to ensure safe, appropriate and cost-effectiveuse of medicines. As part of the Pharmacy team, you will be required tocontribute to the 7-day rota which includes weekends and late night duty

Job responsibilities
  • To lead and ensure theeffective and efficient management and delivery of in-patient pharmacydispensing services at STSFT
  • To work with theAssociate Chief Pharmacist for Operational services and assist with projects to improve efficiency and establish greater integration both within the departmentand the Trust to meet the changing needs of the organisation.
  • To develop, implementand monitor standards for the service, including ensuring compliance withrelevant medicines legislation.
  • To implement and co-ordinate audit and research activities within the dispensary.
  • To participate atmanagerial meetings as a Senior Technician Manager, providing support to both theoperational and corporate delivery of services to meet the best interests ofpatients and service users.
  • To work as part of teamand when required, provide cross-cover to other operational Senior technicians.
  • To work in partnershipwith Choice Ltd. Out-Patient services, ensuring staffing requirements as deliveredas per contractual agreements.
  • To ensure on-goingmanagement, training and development of staff within Dispensary services.

Physical Skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of the team and lead a team.
  • To participate in a weekend pharmacy service and relevant bank holiday arrangements.
Experience
  • Broad experience in all aspects of hospital pharmacy, but especially dispensary systems of work.
  • Experience of supervising, training and developing other members of the pharmacy team.
  • Experience of working with pharmacy computer stock control systems and other computer software including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Demonstrable ability to analyse and overcome barriers in implementation of change.
  • Demonstrable ability to lead and work as part of a team and to motivate and persuade, with a management style which values the contribution of team members.
  • Demonstrable excellent workload and time management skills and the ability to prioritise personal and team workload.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy computer stock control systems and other computer software including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • A general awareness of NHS strategic documents affecting pharmacy.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) to convey a range of subject matter including complex and sensitive material to a wide range of internal and external recipients.
  • Ability to mediate/undertake conflict resolution within the team and also with service users and to manage performance when required.
  • Excellent analytical and judgemental skills to deal with the resolution of job-related problems.
Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services and approved underpinning knowledge e.g. BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent recognised pharmacy technician qualification.
  • Registered as a pharmacy technician with General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Recognised Accredited Checking Technician qualification with relevant post qualification experience working in that role.
  • Evidence of continued professional development complying with the requirements as set out by the General Pharmaceutical Council to maintain registration.
  • Up to date training in Good Clinical Practice and understanding of clinical trial requirements.
