Job description

The Virology ISO: 15189 accredited Hub laboratory at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey (Berkshire Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS), has a vacancy for a Senior Pathology Support Worker to work in the laboratory.

BSPS is a successful, progressive pathology network formed as a contractual joint venture between 5 trusts providing services to acute Trusts, primary and community care and private healthcare. The laboratory is also currently implementing a new state of the art automation tender which will be replacing some of this equipment. The laboratory opening hours are 7am – 7pm Monday – Friday, 9am – 1pm on Saturdays.

We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and well-motivated candidate with appropriate qualifications and/or relevant experience to join the team of the Virology department for Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS). We are looking for a candidate who has experience in specimen reception and laboratory skills for the accurate and safe use of laboratory equipment and reagents.

This post involves routine laboratory duties to support the department including:
  1. Receipt of samples from specimen reception and tracking
  2. Disposal of samples/reagents
  3. Responsibility for the referral of samples to other laboratories
  4. Entry of results into the laboratory computer information system (LIMS)
  5. Answering telephone/email queries
  6. Performing maintenance of equipment

In addition, you will also receive full training to use and maintain automated equipment in the department to perform assays, rotating through sections of each laboratory under the supervision of biomedical scientists.

We are looking for candidates who have some general laboratory skills for the accurate and safe use of laboratory equipment and reagents, but Virology experience is not necessary. To be successful, the candidate, as well as being friendly and reliable, will need a flexible attitude towards work with good organisational skills, attention to detail and communication. They must have the ability to work under pressure and work well within a team.

Our vision is to be one of the best healthcare Trusts in the country. There has never been a better time to join us in the NHS at ASPH. We are committed to providing continuous professional development, staff benefits and flexibility to shape our workforce around our patient care.

This is an exciting time to join our Trust, as we work on the expansion of our theatres at Ashford Hospital and move towards this becoming our dedicated elective centre. We want to create a state-of-the-art centre for excellence for planned surgical procedures; with care delivered by dedicated, specialist teams in a modern and well-equipped environment.

We hope to use this centre to create an environment of learning and to facilitate training of the next generation of our skilled NHS workforce. Our plans are ambitious - why not, come and be a part of our journey.

Adverts may close early, so applicants are encouraged to submit an application as soon as possible.

Main responsibilities include:
  1. Accepting a wide range of clinical samples into the Virology department
  2. Performing analysis of potentially infectious samples using sophisticated automated equipment
  3. Maintaining laboratory equipment
  4. Working in cooperation with BMS staff to ensure workload is processed in a timely and efficient manner
  5. Performing a range of administrative tasks in all sections of the laboratory as required
