Job description

An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Paediatric Audiologist to join our friendly, flexible, multidisciplinary Paediatric Audiology team at Hertfordshire Community Trust Audiology on a permanent basis. This post offers excellent opportunities to consolidate your rehabilitation and advance your auditory diagnostic skills. In addition, the post will endeavour to develop your leadership and management skills.

You will have a BSc/MSc in Audiology (or equivalent) and will also be RCCP/AHCS registered. We encourage CPD and further training will be provided as per the post holder's needs and service needs.

The Children's Hearing service provides second and third tier services to children and young people living within the West Hertfordshire area. There are three sites from which clinics are held, and the post holder will be expected to cover clinics at all three sites as needed. Therefore, a full valid driving license and access to a car for business purposes is essential (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010). The main site will be the one closest to you.

This post will also require supporting the wider system of Herts and West Essex as needed to support mutual aid requirements.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead children's hearing assessment clinics for children of all ages
  • Undertake electrophysiological assessments (including Auditory Brainstem Responses testing and Auditory Steady State Response testing on newborns referred through the newborn hearing screen)
  • Provide hearing aid management to children of all ages
  • Communicate effectively with service users and team members
  • Provide clinical supervision and support to junior audiologists
  • Assist the Audiology Service Lead in daily management and service improvement initiatives
  • Take on operational responsibilities within the department
  • Support the wider system of Herts and West Essex as required

Job responsibilities

Diagnostic Audiological Assessment

  • Perform audiological investigations to assess hearing, including history taking, otoscopy, pure tone audiometry, VRA, performance audiometry, tympanometry, speech testing, and diagnostic electrophysiological testing (ABR, ASSR, OAEs)
  • Collaborate with staff involved in assessment and rehabilitation to ensure effective service delivery

Auditory Habilitation and Rehabilitation

  • Assess auditory (re)habilitative needs and formulate management strategies
  • Advise on communication strategies, hearing aids, assistive devices, and auditory training
  • Refer to medical and support services as needed
  • Select and fit hearing aids appropriately, including newborns, with real ear/probe microphone measurements
  • Follow-up for fine-tuning and onward referrals
  • Holistically review and incorporate the child's and family's needs into management plans

Service Improvement and Leadership

  • Provide clinical supervision, mentoring, and teaching to junior staff
  • Lead service improvement initiatives and projects
  • Conduct audits and report findings
  • Support the service lead in advancing the service's quality agenda
Person Specification
Qualifications & Training
  • MSc in Audiological Science or equivalent; BSc in Audiology or equivalent
  • RCCP/HCPC registration
  • STP, HTS in paediatrics, CAC, or equivalent experience
  • Ability to perform ABR and electrophysiological tests
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Attendance at relevant electrophysiology courses
Experience & Knowledge
  • In-depth knowledge of ear and balance system anatomy and physiology
  • Significant post-qualification experience in pediatric audiology assessments
  • Experience in pediatric hearing aid fitting, including RECDs
  • Experience in ABRs, some experience with ASSRs and cortical testing desirable
  • Teaching and training experience
  • Leadership and management skills
  • Experience with audits and quality improvement projects
Other
  • Valid UK driving license and access to a car (unless disabled under the Equality Act 2010)

  • Effective communication, especially with hearing-impaired children and families
  • Skilled in delivering difficult news
  • Competent in taking impressions in children and infants
