Job description

SLR is seeking an experienced Ornithologist to join our expanding ecology team and lead various projects, primarily supporting renewable energy initiatives across the UK.

The role involves managing survey work, data analysis, report writing, tendering, and project management. It offers an exciting opportunity to oversee ornithology contributions to large, complex projects. You will be supported by experienced professionals to develop your skills and advance your career.

This is a hybrid role requiring periodic office attendance (https://www.slrconsulting.com/eur/about/locations). We consider candidates outside office locations within England, Wales, and Scotland.

The role

Responsibilities include:

1. Managing and delivering ornithological aspects of projects, providing technical advice to clients and colleagues.
2. Leading ornithology surveys using various methodologies.
3. Producing technical reports, including scoping reports and EIA chapters, with data analysis.
4. Supporting tender processes, including proposal writing, budgeting, and subcontracting.
5. Supervising and mentoring junior staff, with potential staff management responsibilities.
6. Collaborating with other technical teams and senior ecology staff across offices.

Remote work and out-of-hours work may be required depending on client site needs.

About you

We welcome applications at various seniority levels, from Senior Field to Associate Consultant, ideally with:

• A degree in Ecology, Biological Science, or equivalent (MSc preferred), with CIEEM membership or similar.
• Strong passion for ornithology, with excellent bird ID skills and survey technique experience.
• Understanding of scientific data collection and accurate recording.
• Project management skills, including planning, budgeting, and stakeholder liaison.
• Solid knowledge of ecology, survey guidelines, and environmental assessments.
• Understanding of UK wildlife legislation and bird conservation status.
• Excellent communication and report writing skills.
