Job summary

AWE is recruiting a Compliance and Nuclear Safety Lead to drive safety justification across the Business Unit, ensuring regulatory alignment and robust risk management. The role is fully onsite at Aldermaston, Reading, with a 9-day fortnight and opportunities to shape safety culture and regulatory interfaces.

Qualifications

• Security clearance required (SC with 10 years UK residency for DV) and British citizenship.
• Strong knowledge of nuclear safety, regulatory frameworks and compliance.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and maintenance of Nuclear Safety justifications for the Business Unit.
• Ensure safety cases remain current and aligned to operational configuration and planned change.
• Provide authoritative advice to Leadership on safety case adequacy, margins, constraints and limitations.
• Hold BU accountability for compliance with Nuclear Site Licence Conditions, Authorisation Conditions and environmental permits.
• Provide assurance that operations are delivered safely and in full regulatory compliance with nuclear, environmental, health, safety, security and quality requirements.
• Own interpretation and application of regulatory expectations within the BU, ensuring proportionality and consistency.
• Act on behalf of the Duty Holder for governance, permissioning and assurance of operations at the Nuclear Safety Justification level.
• Enable and evidence Collective Competence and SQEP arrangements across the BU.
• Ensure governance and management arrangements are in place and effective.
• Serve as the principal regulatory interface for the BU.
• Lead engagement with regulators including inspections, interventions and formal correspondence.
• Define, own and lead the BU Nuclear Risk Management programme.
