Job summary

BT Group, the UK’s leading communications group, is seeking a Senior Network Tooling Engineer in Birmingham to shape monitoring, alerting, and automation across a large-scale HMRC network estate. You will evolve tooling and lab environments, drive efficiency, and resolve complex incidents while collaborating with diverse technical teams.

The role requires experience with virtualization, scripting, and troubleshooting, plus eligibility for UK government security clearance.

Qualifications

  • Experience with network monitoring and automation tooling (Netscout, Riverbed or similar).
  • Proficient in network troubleshooting across LAN/WAN/VLAN/WLAN.
  • Scripting/automation skills in Python or PowerShell; familiarity with CI/CD tools (Ansible, GitLab).
  • Knowledge of virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V) and directory/databases (AD, SQL/Oracle).
  • Structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a key player in supporting and enhancing tooling, networks, and lab environments across the HMRC estate, ensuring seamless monitoring and automation performance.
  • Configure, deploy, and manage virtualised environments (including VMware vCenter), driving stability and scalable troubleshooting.
  • Bring network simulations to life using virtualisation tools such as EVE-NG or CML to support testing and continuous improvement.
  • Lead technical investigations and provide expert oversight on changes to ensure quality and risk minimisation.
  • Collaborate with HMRC and supplier teams to drive continual service improvement while aligning with BT/HMRC standards.

About the role

As a Senior Network Tooling Engineer, you’ll shape and enhance the monitoring, alerting, and automation capabilities that underpin critical HMRC network services. You’ll play a key role in evolving tooling and lab environments - driving efficiency, resolving complex incidents, and collaborating with a wide range of technical stakeholders to deliver continuous improvements. This is a great opportunity for a proactive engineer who enjoys innovation, solving complex challenges, and making a meaningful impact across a large-scale, high-profile network estate.

The successful candidate must be eligible for, and able to obtain and maintain, SC UK Government Security Clearance.

What you’ll be doing
  • Act as a key player in supporting and enhancing tooling, networks, and lab environments across the HMRC estate, ensuring seamless monitoring and automation performance.
  • Configure, deploy, and manage virtualised environments (including VMware vCenter), driving stability, scalability, and effective troubleshooting across complex systems.
  • Bring network simulations to life using virtualisation tools such as EVE-NG or CML to support testing, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead technical investigations and provide expert oversight on changes, ensuring quality, minimising risk, and enabling smooth transition of new services into live support.
  • Collaborate closely with HMRC and supplier teams to drive continual service improvement while ensuring alignment with BT and HMRC standards, policies, and best practice.
Essential Skills / Experience
  • Experience supporting and configuring network monitoring and automation tooling, with an understanding of platforms such as Netscout, Riverbed, or similar
  • Confidence in network troubleshooting and packet analysis across enterprise environments (LAN, WAN, VLAN, WLAN)
  • Familiarity with scripting and automation using technologies such as Python, PowerShell, or similar, alongside exposure to CI/CD and tools like Ansible or GitLab
  • Knowledge of virtualised environments and infrastructure, including administration and support of platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, Active Directory, or databases (SQL/Oracle)
  • Ability to investigate, diagnose, and resolve complex issues using structured troubleshooting and root cause analysis approaches
Desirable Skills / Experience
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build relationships, work across teams, and contribute to technical leadership and service improvement initiatives

This role offers a 3 together, 2 wherever working model. This means you are required to be at your contractual location 3 days a week with 2 flexible days per week.
