Job summary

At Siemens Mobility, we are transforming rail infrastructure through innovative signalling, communications, control and electrification systems. Within our Communications & Information Systems (CIS) business, we deliver mission-critical Network, Telecoms and Security solutions supporting operational railway systems across the UK and beyond.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Network Design Engineer to support the assured development and delivery of network, operational telecommunications and security system designs for HS2, while also providing technical support to the wider networks team. The role combines technical leadership, requirements management, system integration, stakeholder coordination and design assurance across complex, multidisciplinary rail environments.

HS2 and Wider Networks Context

HS2 is one of Europe’s largest infrastructure programmes and will deliver a high-speed railway connecting London and the West Midlands. Siemens Mobility has been awarded contracts covering key rail systems, including Operational Telecommunications and Security Systems for the HS2 route. The role requires robust technical coordination, clear system definition, evidence-based assurance and close alignment with HS2 requirements, interfaces and review processes, while also supporting wider network design activities across the CIS business.

The role supports the development of secure, resilient and maintainable telecommunications and security designs that interface with wider HS2 rail systems, civil infrastructure, station systems, control systems and operational railway processes.

The Role

The Senior Network Design Engineer is responsible for leading and supporting network, telecoms and security design activities across HS2 and wider network programmes. This includes defining, assuring and developing secure, resilient architectures supporting operational telecommunications, security systems, voice services, data networks, station and route-wide communications, and interfaces with Signalling, SCADA, M&E, station systems and wider railway control systems.

Working closely with HS2, project engineering, delivery partners, system integration teams, multidisciplinary design teams and the wider networks team, the role ensures that solutions are developed safely, securely and efficiently, with clear requirements traceability, interface control, design governance and acceptance evidence throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

• Undertake the role of Senior Engineer, providing technical leadership across HS2 network, operational telecommunications and security system design activities, with additional support to wider network design work where required.
• Lead the development of high-level and low-level architectures for secure, resilient and maintainable telecoms and security systems.
• Act as Responsible Engineer or independent checker where assigned, ensuring outputs are technically robust and suitable for client review.
• Support requirements management, including allocation, interpretation, compliance evidence and traceability within HS2 requirements processes.
• Coordinate design interfaces with Signalling, SCADA, M&E, station systems, security systems, civil infrastructure and other rail systems packages.
• Support IDC, IDR and other assurance review cycles by preparing design evidence, responding to comments and managing technical close-out.
• Produce architecture diagrams, system descriptions, interface information, design reports, technical specifications and assurance documentation.
• Define IP addressing, subnetting, network segmentation, resilience and cyber security strategies appropriate to an operational railway environment.
• Support system integration, testing, commissioning, migration and maintainability considerations for HS2 and wider network systems.
• Apply CDM 2015 and Safe by Design principles by identifying design hazards, managing residual risks and communicating safety-related assumptions and constraints.

Systems Scope

• Operational data networks, LAN/WAN infrastructure and associated routing, switching and resilience arrangements.
• Telecommunications services including voice, bearer network interfaces, operational communications and route-wide connectivity.
• Server/ Hypervisor build and deployment.
• Integration with HS2 and wider rail systems, including station systems, control systems, SCADA, signalling and operational railway management arrangements.

Essential Requirements

• Degree-qualified in Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• Established knowledge of the systems engineering lifecycle within a railway or mission-critical infrastructure environment.
• Demonstrable experience in leading the delivery of an IP/MPLS transmission network in an Operational Telecommunications environment.
• Experience delivering network, telecoms or security solutions within safety-related, operational or highly regulated environments.
• Knowledge of requirements management, compliance evidence, design assurance and technical governance processes.
• Ability to manage technical interfaces, assumptions, dependencies and design constraints across multidisciplinary project teams.
• Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and leadership skills, with the ability to present complex technical solutions clearly.
• Ability to work effectively to challenging project timescales and formal review milestones.
• Significant experience with LAN/WAN network architectures, operational networks, cyber-secure infrastructure and railway telecoms design.
• Strong understanding of network security principles, segmentation, resilience, access control and operational technology security considerations.
• Experience producing Network designs for Signalling, SCADA, Voice, SISS, CCTV, access control, security systems or backbone communications networks.
• Cisco CCNA level knowledge or above, supported by significant practical experience.
• Experience producing design documentation suitable for IDC, IDR or equivalent client assurance review processes.
• Ability to support comment resolution, design change control, configuration management and acceptance evidence development.

Design Assurance and Expected Outputs

• System definition inputs, system boundary descriptions and supporting design assumptions.
• Architecture drawings, design reports, technical specifications and interface control information.
• Requirements compliance evidence, traceability records and supporting acceptance rationale.
• IDC, IDR and review packs, including response to comments and evidence of technical close-out.
• Design risk information, CDM residual risk outputs and Safe by Design evidence.

Desirable Requirements

• Chartered Engineer status or actively working towards professional registration.
• IRSE Licence or demonstrable experience working within railway engineering assurance processes.
• Experience in UK railway operational telecommunications, preferably on HS2, Network Rail or other major rail infrastructure programmes.
• Knowledge of signalling, SCADA, radio, M&E, station systems, control rooms and operational railway interfaces.
• Experience with software defined networking, network virtualisation, data centre technologies or network automation in secure infrastructure environments.
• Knowledge of cyber security technologies including next generation firewalls, SIEM, IAM, threat intelligence platforms and operational technology security monitoring.
• Experience supporting design package planning, deliverable scheduling and readiness for formal client submissions.
