Job summary

Birmingham City Council's Birmingham Libraries are seeking a dependable Senior Van Driver / Mobile Library Driver to bring library services directly to residents across the city. You will drive the mobile library, perform vehicle checks, handle stock, assist customers, and promote reading and inclusion.

Role includes weekend work and potential location changes; a valid LGV Class C licence and Driver CPC, plus strong customer service, are essential.

Qualifications

• Hold a valid LGV Class C licence and Driver CPC.
• Confident driving large vehicles in busy urban environments.
• Knowledgeable about basic vehicle maintenance and safety checks.
• Comfortable using computers and digital systems.
• Excellent communicator with strong customer service.
• Passionate about reading and supporting local communities.
• Comfortable working with diverse groups.
• Strong team player who can also work independently.

Responsibilities

• Drive the Mobile Library on scheduled routes across Birmingham.
• Carry out daily vehicle safety checks and report defects.
• Liaise with Fleet Maintenance for repairs.
• Load, unload, clean and fuelling the vehicle.
• Issue and return library materials using library systems.
• Assist customers with enquiries and membership applications.
• Support library activities and community engagement events.
• Maintain stock, shelving, and promotional displays.
• Suggest improvements to routes and timetables.
• Promote reading, learning, and inclusion while delivering service.
