Senior Mid Market Underwriter – UK Commercial Lines

Location: London

A global insurer combining financial strength, international reach and specialist underwriting expertise is seeking a Senior Mid Market Underwriter to join its UK Commercial Lines team in London.

The business takes a long-term approach to underwriting and broker partnerships, with an emphasis on understanding clients’ needs and providing tailored insurance solutions. This opportunity offers an experienced underwriter the scope to take ownership of a portfolio, develop broker relationships and contribute to the team’s continued growth.

Suited to someone with 6–10 years’ underwriting experience, the role covers new and renewal business across selected industry sectors, including real estate, hospitality, financial institutions, professional services, technology and life sciences.

Working within a collaborative team, you will combine technical expertise with a responsive, commercially minded approach to delivering multi-line solutions through a network of retail brokers.

What you’ll be doing:

• Manage and develop a Mid Market portfolio, balancing profitable growth with disciplined risk selection.
• Evaluate new business and renewal opportunities, assessing exposures, coverage, pricing and programme structure.
• Set appropriate terms and conditions within your underwriting authority and the business’s underwriting guidelines.
• Strengthen existing retail broker relationships and develop new trading opportunities.
• Represent the business at broker and client meetings, industry events and networking opportunities.
• Apply sound underwriting judgement to complex risks, including multinational business where applicable.
• Monitor portfolio performance, identify emerging risks and take appropriate action.
• Prepare clear, well-supported referrals for risks outside your underwriting authority.
• Support account reviews, underwriting audits and governance requirements.
• Share technical knowledge and support the development of less experienced colleagues.

What you’ll bring:

• 6–10 years’ Property & Casualty underwriting experience, with a strong track record in the Mid Market segment.
• Strong commercial insurance knowledge, ideally including multi-line and multinational business.
• Experience managing and developing a profitable portfolio.
• Established retail broker relationships and the ability to build new partnerships.
• Strong negotiation skills and confidence in making and explaining underwriting decisions.
• Commercial awareness, sound judgement and underwriting discipline.
• Excellent communication and relationship management skills.
• A collaborative approach and willingness to share your expertise.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
