Job summary

The Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Microbiology Consultant to join a four-strong team working across sites. The post is for full-time duty with 10 programmed activities and is based at Southport Hospital, with agile working considered.

The role offers leadership in antimicrobial stewardship, delivery of OPAT services, and active participation in MDTs and infection control initiatives.

Qualifications

• Full and specialist GMC registration or eligible within 6 months of interview.
• UK-trained: hold a CCT or be within six months of award by interview.
• Non-UK trained: evidence of equivalence to UK CCT.
• FRCPath fellowship or equivalent; Diploma in Hospital Infection Control.
• Higher Research Degree (MD or PhD).
• MRCP or equivalent qualification.
• Recognised teaching qualification and evidence of relevant specialty training.
• Ability to work independently with leadership and strong IT skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead antimicrobial stewardship clinical service with OPAT and ward presence.
• Participate in MDT meetings and cross-site microbiology activities.
• Contribute to infection prevention and control; review job plan with consultants.
• Travel to other sites as role requires; engage in teaching and supervision.
• Demonstrate evidence-based practice and strong communication across teams.
