Job summary

Our client in Cambridge is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the development of mechanical products from concept through to manufacture, ensuring innovative, cost‑effective and production‑ready solutions.

Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will mentor junior engineers, drive CAD‑based design activities and collaborate with manufacturing, quality and procurement to deliver robust, compliant products.

Qualifications

• A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Proven experience as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer or similar.
• Strong CAD experience and ability to deliver manufacturing‑ready designs.
• Understanding of materials, fabrication, machining, welding and assembly processes.
• Experience with engineering calculations, tolerancing and FEA.
• Experience designing for manufacture and cost efficiency.
• Strong problem‑solving, communication and project management skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design projects from concept through to manufacture.
• Produce detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies and drawings.
• Carry out engineering calculations, simulations and design validation.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their engineering team. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you'll lead the design and development of mechanical products from concept through to manufacture, ensuring solutions are innovative, cost–effective, compliant and production–ready.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design projects from concept through to manufacture.
• Produce detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies and technical drawings.
• Carry out engineering calculations, simulations and design validation activities.
• Select suitable materials and manufacturing processes.
• Develop and test prototypes to ensure performance, durability and compliance.
• Work closely with manufacturing, quality, procurement and project teams.
• Improve existing products to enhance performance, reliability and manufacturability.
• Ensure designs meet relevant engineering standards and regulatory requirements.
• Support technical problem–solving and root cause investigations.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance where required.

Skills & Experience
