The Role

BG&E has a strong reputation in materials science, understanding existing and in-situ materials to optimize their use in projects. We seek a curious, capable Senior Materials Engineer to expand our expertise and work closely with design engineers, clients, and third parties, providing valuable materials advice.

This role involves representing BG&E in the UK market for materials engineering and includes responsibilities such as:

1. Conducting business development meetings independently to secure new clients and opportunities.
2. Drafting reports and proposals independently, with attention to commercial aspects.
3. Undertaking field work, including overseeing subcontractors for concrete cores, cover meter scanning, and invasive testing.
4. Managing projects from inception, including budgeting, resourcing, revenue recognition, and invoicing.
5. Collaborating confidently with external partners and clients.

About You

You will be a key member of our engineering team, enhancing our skills and supporting our engineering and drafting teams. The ideal candidate will have:

• At least 10 years’ experience in construction and materials engineering.
• Qualifications in Materials Science and/or Engineering.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with clients and internally.
• Technical expertise in:
• Concrete technology, durability, chloride diffusion, carbonation, thermal modelling.
• Metallurgy, corrosion mechanics, coatings.
• Statistical analysis.
• Relevant engineering standards and guidelines.
• Experience with testing tools like cover meters, Schmidt Hammer, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity.
• Knowledge of construction defects and repair methods for concrete, steel, and masonry.
• Existing contacts with UK construction materials subcontractors.
• Confidence in engaging with different disciplines within the office.
• Ideally, hold CSCS White Card, Driver’s License, and tickets for working at height and in confined spaces.
• Good industry ties and understanding of embodied carbon, decarbonisation, and sustainability in construction.
