The Role:

BG&E has a strong reputation in utilizing materials science to understand existing and in-situ materials, enabling the most efficient use in project contexts. We seek a capable, curious candidate eager to expand their experience and work closely with design engineers, clients, and third parties, providing expert materials advice.

As a Senior Materials Engineer, you will represent BG&E in materials engineering within the UK market. Responsibilities include:

1. Conducting business development meetings independently to secure new clients and opportunities.
2. Drafting reports and proposals independently, with attention to commercial aspects.
3. Undertaking fieldwork independently and as part of a team, including overseeing subcontractors for concrete cores, cover meter scanning, and invasive testing.
4. Managing projects from inception, including budgeting, resourcing, revenue recognition, and invoicing.
5. Working confidently with external partners and clients.

About You:

You will be a key member of the BG&E Engineering team, strengthening skills and capabilities and supporting engineering and drafting teams. You should have:

• At least 10 years’ experience in construction and materials engineering fields.
• Qualifications in Materials Science and/or Engineering.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills internally and with clients.
• A solid technical background in:
• Concrete technology, including durability, chloride diffusion, carbonation, and thermal modelling.
• Metallurgy, corrosion mechanics, and coatings.
• Statistical analysis.
• Relevant engineering standards and guidelines.
• Proficiency with testing tools such as cover meters, Schmidt Hammer, and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity testing.
• Understanding of defects in concrete, steel, and masonry, and repair methods.
• Experience working with subcontractors and industry contacts in the UK related to construction materials.
• Confidence to engage with different disciplines within the office, including bridge, building, and civil teams.
• Ideally, CSCS White Card, Driver’s License, working at height, and confined space tickets.
• Good industry ties and knowledge of sustainability initiatives, embodied carbon, and decarbonization in construction.
