About the Role
An established and growing independent accountancy practice based in Birmingham is looking to recruit an experienced Accountancy Practice Manager / Senior Manager to join its leadership team.
This is a key leadership position within the practice, providing the successful candidate with overall responsibility for managing a substantial and varied client portfolio, leading and developing a dedicated team of accountants, and reviewing complex technical assignments.
Working closely with the Partners, the role will involve high-level technical oversight, client relationship management, team management, and strategic input to relieve partner review pressure and support the continued growth of the firm.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing a substantial client portfolio across a range of sectors, including specialist healthcare portfolios (GPs, doctors, and dentists), sole traders, and corporate entities.
- Conducting high-level reviews of statutory accounts, management accounts, and tax returns completed by the team before Partner sign-off.
- Acting as a primary senior point of contact for clients, managing day-to-day relationships, and delivering proactive business advice.
- Leading, managing, and mentoring a team of accountants, conducting regular one-to-one meetings, performance reviews, and supporting career development.
- Overseeing team workflow, job allocations, and capacity management to ensure all compliance deadlines and internal target dates are met.
- Working closely with Partners on complex advisory assignments, technical accounting queries, and practice management initiatives.
- Maintaining technical excellence across the department, ensuring all work adheres to UK accounting standards and regulations.
- Driving internal process improvements, client onboarding, and adoption of modern accounting technologies.
- Assisting Partners with business development, client proposals, and expanding services to existing clients.
Requirements & Experience
- ACA, ACCA qualified or equivalent; experienced QBE candidates with extensive practice leadership experience will also be considered.
- Proven track record working in a Senior Accountant, Assistant Manager, or Manager capacity within an accountancy practice.
- Strong technical expertise across UK GAAP, accounts preparation, and tax compliance.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising, mentoring, and managing junior and senior team members.
- Experience managing client portfolios and acting as a trusted senior contact.
- Proven ability to review accounts and tax files efficiently with strong attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical financial matters clearly to non-finance clients.
- Strong organisational and workload management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities across a team.
- A commercial mindset with a focus on delivering exceptional client service and supporting practice growth.
