Job summary

Advanced, part of Halma plc, is seeking a Senior Maintenance Technician to maintain and improve PCB and electronics manufacturing equipment.

You will operate across electrical, electronic, automation and mechanical domains to maximise uptime, quality and efficiency in a fast-paced UK production environment.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a manufacturing maintenance environment.
  • Strong fault-finding skills on electrical and electronic systems.
  • Good mechanical aptitude with experience maintaining industrial machinery.
  • Ability to interpret electrical and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience working with pneumatic systems and automated equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on manufacturing equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair faults on PCB manufacturing equipment: SMT, reflow ovens, wave soldering, AOI, pick-and-place, test systems.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns to minimise downtime.
  • Develop and maintain spares stock levels.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, electronic, PLC, sensor and control faults.
  • Assist with installation and commissioning of new equipment and production lines.

About the role

The Senior Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and improving manufacturing equipment used within a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and electronics manufacturing environment. The role requires a combination of electrical, electronic, automation, and mechanical skills to ensure maximum equipment uptime, product quality, and operational efficiency.

What you’ll be doing

Equipment Maintenance
  • Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on manufacturing equipment in accordance with maintenance schedules.
  • Diagnose and repair faults on PCB manufacturing and assembly equipment, including:
    • SMT (Surface Mount Technology) machines
    • Reflow ovens
    • Wave soldering systems
    • Selective soldering equipment
    • AOI (Automated Optical Inspection) systems
    • Pick-and-place machines
    • PCB routing and handling equipment
    • Test and inspection systems
  • Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and minimise production downtime.
  • Develop and maintain critical spares stock levels.
Electrical and Electronic Support
  • Troubleshoot electrical, electronic, PLC, sensor, and control system faults.
  • Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Carry out repairs on electrical panels, motors, drives, power supplies, and control circuits.
  • Assist with installation and commissioning of new equipment and production lines.
  • Support continuous improvement activities through equipment modifications and upgrades.
Mechanical Maintenance
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical faults including bearings, belts, chains, conveyors, lead screws, pneumatic systems, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Perform equipment alignment, adjustment, lubrication, and replacement of worn components.
  • Maintain pneumatic and vacuum systems used within manufacturing processes.
  • Support machine rebuilds, refurbishments, and process improvement projects.
  • Fabricate or modify simple mechanical parts and fixtures where required.
Continuous Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, performance, and efficiency.
  • Support root cause analysis of recurring equipment issues.
  • Participate in Lean Manufacturing, TPM, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and update maintenance management systems.
  • Identify opportunities for equipment upgrades and process improvements.
Compliance and Safety
  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with company health, safety, environmental, and quality procedures.
  • Adhere to lockout/tagout (LOTO) and safe isolation procedures.
  • Support compliance with ISO, IPC, and customer-specific standards where applicable.
  • Maintain a clean and organised working environment.

Relevant experience

Essential
  • Experience in a manufacturing maintenance environment.
  • Strong fault-finding skills on electrical and electronic systems.
  • Good mechanical aptitude with experience maintaining industrial machinery.
  • Ability to interpret electrical and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience working with pneumatic systems and automated equipment.
Desirable
  • Experience within PCB, electronics, SMT, or high-tech manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of PLC diagnostics and industrial networks.
  • Experience with servo systems, robotics, or machine vision equipment.
  • Understanding of Lean Manufacturing and TPM principles.

Education and training

Essential
  • Recognised engineering qualification (HNC, HND, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent) in Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic, or Maintenance Engineering.
Desirable
  • IPAF or PASMA certifications.
  • Safety Certification, ie IOSH.
