We are committed to making the process of applying for this role as accessible as possible. If you need to discuss adjustments or access requirements for the application process, or have any questions about our Extend programme, please contact the BBC Extend team via the shared mailbox .

The BBC are fully committed to providing workplace adjustments to help eliminate barriers in the workplace that disabled people face. To do this, we have our own dedicated BBC Access and Disability Service that provides assessments and support throughout employment with us. If you are successful in applying for this role and require workplace adjustments, we will work with you to get your adjustments in place.

We are looking for an experienced litigator to join the BBC’s Litigation and Information Rights Department as a senior lawyer. You will work closely with programme-makers, journalists, senior management and others within the BBC Group to provide comprehensive advice relating to media disputes (including defamation, privacy, reporting restrictions, contempt and PACE applications), commercial and contractual disputes, judicial review, internal and external inquiries and investigations, other regulatory disputes and contentious requests under the Freedom of Information Act.

The BBC Legal Division is responsible for providing legal advice and assistance across the BBC and for developing and implementing the BBC’s legal strategy. The Legal Division is led by the BBC’s General Counsel. It is made up of the following departments: General Counsel's Office, Litigation and Information Rights, Intellectual Property, Employment, Programme Legal Advice, Commercial and Engineering and Competition and Regulatory Law.

Our overall structure is similar to that found in private practice firms and we provide advice and support on a wide range of diverse matters. Whilst this means the work can be challenging and fast-paced at times, we are open to discussing agile ways of working to support our staff, where appropriate and in line with our flexible working policies.

Main Responsibilities

As a Senior Lawyer, you will be required to provide advice on contentious matters at all levels across the BBC Group, assist in dealing with disputes in the High Court, County Court and other tribunal proceedings, and work effectively with other team members within the Litigation and Information Rights Department and the wider legal team to provide a first class legal service.

Are you the right candidate?

To be successful in this role, you will need substantial experience and knowledge of contentious media law, contract and/or public law and/or experience in internal and externally-led investigations. Excellent written and oral communication skills and experience of advising clients directly and in sometimes urgent circumstances are key; you will have qualified as a solicitor or barrister in a leading law firm or chambers with substantial litigation experience and possess a strong academic background. You will also have an ability to understand the varied needs of clients across the BBC and to advise and communicate with them on legal and other matters.

Why the BBC?

There is no other organisation like the BBC.

As the world’s largest and longest-standing public service broadcaster, we have a unique role that informs culture and democracy in the UK and overseas.

Attracting and retaining the very best talent is at the heart of delivering for our audiences. We are looking for people who are excited to help us build a culture that is creative, inclusive and full of opportunity, regardless of gender, disability, gender reassignment, race, sexual orientation, pregnancy or maternity, marital or civil partnership, age, religion or belief.

We believe in providing equal opportunity and treatment for everyone and are proud to be a Disability Confident employer. Please do contact us if you need to talk through any support or reasonable adjustments, such as subtitles over zoom, extra time, or whatever will meet your needs at reasonable.adjustments@bbc.co.uk.
