Job summary

Starling Bank is seeking experienced Java engineers to design, develop and maintain the payment systems that power instant and scheduled transfers. You will contribute to reliable, scalable services, integrating with Faster Payments, BACS and SWIFT while ensuring high data integrity.

Ideal candidates will have 5+ years Java, strong engineering discipline, and familiarity with AWS/GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform and Grafana. The role supports hybrid work within commuting distance of UK offices.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years of Java experience.
• Ability to write clear, maintainable code.
• Strong understanding of delivering robust, scalable systems.
• Experience with AWS and PostgreSQL is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with distributed service-based architectures and Kubernetes is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain the systems responsible for our payment integrations.
• Ensure system stability and accuracy.
• Integrate with third-party systems that power instant, scheduled and cross-border payments.
• Deliver new features, improved reliability and mandated changes.
• Own integrations with Faster Payments, BACS and SWIFT connectivity.
• Help ensure customer payments are handled properly.
• Work across teams and contribute to mission-critical services.

Salary: £65,000 - 105,000 per year

Requirements:

• We are seeking highly motivated engineers with at least 5 years of Java experience.
• You should have excellent attention to detail and be able to write clear, concise and maintainable code.
• You should have a strong understanding of delivering robust, scalable systems.
• You should have a proven track record of engineering excellence.
• Experience with AWS and Postgres is highly desirable.
• We do not require experience in all of our listed tech stack, but familiarity with Java, AWS, GCP, distributed service-based architecture, Kubernetes (EKS), TeamCity, Terraform and Grafana is a plus.
