Job summary

Orion Electrotech Ltd is seeking a Senior Firmware Engineer to lead our firmware development for IoT devices. You will own the firmware from device to cloud, guiding a small team and collaborating closely with hardware engineers.

You will work on the established firmware platform, manage testing regimes, and help decode data from devices for insightful analysis. A strong embedded background and teamwork are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
• Mid to Senior level engineer with strong proficiency in C/C++ and Python
• Experience with STM32 microcontrollers and ARM Cortex-M
• Experience with IoT protocols such as MQTT and LoRaWAN
• Cloud integration experience, preferably AWS IoT Core
• Excellent debugging skills for hardware and firmware issues
• Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and static code analysis tools
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills
• Experience defining and implementing firmware test approaches (unit/integration/on-hardware)
• Experience with binary protocol design and payload decoding

Responsibilities

• Contribute to firmware development and share best practices
• Design, develop, and maintain embedded firmware for IoT devices using C/C++ and Python
• Collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure firmware/hardware integration
• Implement and optimise MQTT and LoRaWAN communication
• Integrate firmware with cloud platforms (AWS IoT Core)
• Analyse and debug complex hardware and firmware issues
• Maintain existing codebases and improve documentation
• Apply CI/CD and static analysis to ensure code quality and stability
• Explore new technologies to improve product performance
• Maintain and develop firmware test regimes (unit/integration/on-hardware)
• Build and maintain modules that decode and unpack device payloads
• Interrogate device data to validate firmware behaviour and assist data analysis
