Job summary

The British Museum is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to lead day-to-day network operations and drive improvements across on-site and hybrid environments in Bloomsbury, London. You will own service delivery, monitor health and security, and provide escalation leadership within a small, collaborative tech team.

With a strong networking background and hands-on role, you will oversee incidents, work with suppliers, and contribute to infrastructure projects while upholding high service

Qualifications

  • Significant experience supporting and managing enterprise network infrastructure environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Cisco switching, including DNAC/ISE.
  • Knowledge of Active Directory/Azure AD, Azure PaaS/IaaS and Windows Server.
  • Experience with network monitoring, performance management and troubleshooting complex issues.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure security principles and cyber security best practices.
  • Experience working within IT service management frameworks and ticketing systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day operation, maintenance and enhancement of network infrastructure services.
  • Monitor the health, performance and security of network environments, proactively identifying issues.
  • Take ownership of infrastructure-related incidents, problems and service requests, ensuring tickets are managed effectively.
  • Provide functional oversight of infrastructure support activities, prioritising workloads and maintaining high service standards.
  • Manage networking technologies including switches, routers, wireless networks, firewalls and connectivity services.
  • Contribute to infrastructure projects, upgrades and technology refresh programmes.
  • Work closely with suppliers and third-party support partners to ensure service delivery.
  • Support cyber security initiatives and ensure infrastructure services adhere to policies and best practices.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation and network diagrams.
  • Act as a senior technical escalation point for complex infrastructure issues.

Senior Infrastructure Engineer

Full-time

Hybrid (at least 4 days per week on-site in Bloomsbury, London)

Fixed term (until December 2029)

£49,829 per annum

About the role

This is an excellent opportunity for an established infrastructure professional with strong networking expertise who enjoys combining hands‑on technical work with operational oversight. Working within a small and collaborative technology team, you will help ensure the stability, security and performance of our network services, supporting colleagues across the organisation to deliver important public and charitable outcomes. In addition, you will provide functional leadership across infrastructure operations, taking ownership of service quality, monitoring workloads, overseeing ticket queues and driving issues through to resolution.

About you
  • Significant experience supporting and managing enterprise network infrastructure environments.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Cisco switching, including DNAC/ISE.
  • Some knowledge of Active Directory/Azure AD, Azure Paas/IaaS and Windows Server.
  • Experience of network monitoring, performance management and troubleshooting complex technical issues and delivering infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure security principles and cyber security best practices.
  • Experience working within IT service management frameworks and ticketing systems.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and take ownership of issues through to successful resolution, translating business requirements to technical initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership skills with a collaborative approach and commitment to delivering high-quality services.
