Job summary

GE Grid Solutions in Stafford seeks a Power Electronics Engineer to design, validate and support HVDC valve converter projects. You will work on VSC, MMC and LCC topologies, performing simulations, type tests and customer-driven validation.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, contribute to system design and testing, and travel internationally to support customers and labs. Strong English communication and engineering background are essential.

Qualifications

• Degree in an Engineering field with experience in design, development and validation of power converters.
• Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink or PLECS, Psim, LTSpice, PSCAD or equivalents for converter and component simulation in HVDC.
• Experience in commissioning projects and developing power electronic solutions for industrial and AC transmission grids.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
• Ability and willingness to travel 30% of the time, including international travel.

Responsibilities

• Generate project documentation (type test specs/reports, design reports).
• Validate key component ratings (size, losses, RAM).
• Work against customer specs (Clause by Clause, Risk analysis).
• Design, model, analyze and validate power electronic topologies for HVDC/FACTS.
• Integrate with other engineering departments for product definition.
• Circuit simulation for design and future testing.
• Design and validate HV power electronics including IGBT/thyristor and passives.
• Develop driver circuits and protection/control for IGBT/thyristor.
• Perform bench and high-voltage testing; fault analysis and design improvements.
• Support lifecycle from development to tender and commissioning.
• Assist site activities during installation and pre-commissioning for customers.
• Expect travel up to 20–30% globally.
