Job summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Primary Design Engineer to lead and deliver high-quality primary engineering designs for HV substations and power infrastructure projects. The role supports hybrid or remote working arrangements within a FTSE 250 company’s specialist power engineering arm, mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with project managers and multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
• Significant experience in primary design for HV substations (33kV-400kV).
• Knowledge of UK/international standards and utility requirements.
• Proven ability to lead design tasks and review the work of others.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Chartered Engineer status or working towards Chartered Engineer status (desirable).

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of primary engineering solutions for HV substations and associated infrastructure.
• Produce and review primary design deliverables including layouts, GA drawings, equipment specifications, and technical reports.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, client specifications, and safety requirements.
• Provide technical guidance, checking, and mentoring to junior engineers.
• Interface with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
• Support project planning, cost estimates, and risk assessment.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards.
