Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Senior Protection and Control Design Engineer to lead HV/EHV substation protection design, develop SLDs and control interfaces, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams. You will ensure compliance with global standards and support project delivery from design through commissioning.

The role emphasizes innovation, collaboration, and delivering high-quality engineering packages within a hybrid work setup across UK sites.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent required.
• Experience in HV/EHV Substation Protection & Control Design required.
• Knowledge of protection schemes for Transmission and Distribution substations.
• Experience with protection relays from major manufacturers (Siemens, GE, ABB/Hitachi Energy, Schneider Electric, SEL).
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
• Excellent communication and coordination skills.
• CDAE qualification is highly desirable.
• Ideally knowledge of IEC 61850 and substation automation systems.
• Familiarity with SCADA, RTU, SAS, and communication protocols.
• Ability to independently deliver complete Protection & Control engineering packages.

Responsibilities

• Prepare Protection & Control engineering designs for HV/EHV substations (11kV–400kV or above).
• Develop Protection SLDs, AC/DC Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, Terminal Plans, Cable Schedules, and Interconnection Diagrams.
• Design Protection Relay Panels, Control Panels, Annunciation Panels, Metering Panels, and RTU/SCADA interfaces.
• Prepare Protection Relay Settings philosophy and coordinate with system studies.
• Perform protection coordination and review relay configurations.
• Prepare engineering calculations, cable sizing, voltage drop calculations, and battery sizing.
• Coordinate with Civil, Primary, Telecom, and SCADA engineering teams.
• Review vendor drawings and ensure compliance with project specifications.
• Support FAT, SAT, commissioning, and technical issue resolution.
• Ensure designs comply with IEC, IEEE, National Grid, and client-specific standards.
• Support project execution by meeting quality, safety, and schedule requirements.
