Job summary

J. Murphy & Sons Ltd is seeking an Engineering Manager (HV Cables) to lead design, procurement, testing, and commissioning of EHV cable projects across multiple sites in the UK.

You will provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and ensure compliance with IEC, British Standards and National Grid specs. The role requires a Degree in Electrical/Power Engineering, Chartered Engineer status (or progress towards it) and 10+ years in HV cable systems.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical/Power Engineering or equivalent.
• Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) with IET or IMechE.
• Typically 10+ years in EHV/HV cable design, installation, and commissioning.
• Experience with technical procurement and supplier management for HV cables.
• In-depth knowledge of IEC, British Standards, and National Grid specs.
• Proven track record in leading technical investigations and corrective actions.
• Experience in developing and leading engineering teams.
• Experience with CYMCAP or similar cable rating software and on/offshore projects.
• Familiarity with digital engineering and GIS for cable projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical delivery and assurance of HV cable projects.
• Review design of EHV cable systems (400kV, 275kV, 132kV).
• Oversee HV testing and commissioning activities, including pressure and sheath testing.
• Provide technical leadership for site teams and QA/QC documentation.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers; foster excellence and improvement.
• Represent the business in technical meetings and client reviews.
