Job summary

Dumfries and Galloway Council invites applications for a Senior Harbour Assistant (Fixed Term) based in Stranraer. The role covers Stranraer, Port William, Isle of Whithorn and Garlieston harbours, with a Band 7 salary of £33,621–£35,853 and a fixed term of up to 12 months.

You will supervise harbour operations, minor maintenance, berth bookings and vessel movements, while developing skills towards a Harbour Masters Diploma. A driving licence is required.

Qualifications

• Experience in boat handling is essential.
• Knowledge of harbours and marina operations incl. Port Marine Safety Code desirable.
• Basic Microsoft Office knowledge (Outlook, Excel, Word).
• Driving licence is required for council vehicle use.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the safe and efficient operation of harbours and equipment in line with legislation.
• Supervise minor maintenance works within harbours and navigable channels.
• Assist with berth management, bookings and payment collection.
• Manage and supervise craning and movement of vessels between water and shore storage areas.
• Engage with the public, operators and staff; liaison with contractors; be prepared to work outside normal hours.
