Job description

This is a newly created position within the Ultra I&C Cyber business and presents an exciting opportunity for the right candidate. Once established, you will be tasked with building a new Verification Team, a model that will operate across our projects.

Scope:

Design, develop and institute verification methodologies for FPGA firmware as part of our firmware engineering team, within the Communication Systems Business Unit, delivering multiple concurrent research, development and production programmes ranging from tens of £k to several £m.

To ensure success as a Senior FPGA Verification Engineer, you should possess in-depth knowledge of FPGA firmware engineering and have excellent analytical skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform analysis of system and firmware level requirements to filter out and identify poor or unverifiable requirements.
  • Apply best and pragmatic practices in developing the verification methodologies for FPGA firmware under the direction of the Head of Firmware.
  • Implement test procedures for FPGA firmware that adhere to the project’s requirements and firmware group’s library policies for reuse, project development standards, and security aspects.
  • Review and understand requirements to produce firmware test specifications, including module and full FPGA design test specifications.
  • Ensure test procedures and processes are compatible with the project and firmware groups' continuous integration systems.
  • Undertake integration activities with software and hardware, requiring developing knowledge of both domains.
  • Propose improvements in tools, processes, and techniques that support quality and innovation, making firmware development more efficient and effective.
  • Contribute to defined aspects of the project to achieve an optimal balance between requirements, schedule, and cost.
  • Participate in customer-facing meetings through document preparation, presentations, and active participation.
  • Estimate time and effort required for firmware activities and ensure adherence to these estimates for cost and schedule control.
  • Review technical proposals and assist in providing accurate effort, cost, and risk estimates for bids and proposals, leading to contract awards.
  • Manage security of information as per the Security manual to ensure compliance with government regulations.

Security Clearance Requirements:

You must be willing and able to obtain and maintain SC and DV Clearances.

Qualifications / Skills Required:

  • Essential:
    • Degree in engineering, mathematics, or science, or equivalent experience
    • Experience in FPGA design verification, test tools, and design for test
    • Experience with Xilinx, Lattice, Altera, or Microsemi FPGAs and their development tools
    • Ability to interpret hardware schematics
    • Experience with version control, change control, and bug tracking systems
  • Desirable:
    • Experience with firmware verification processes/lifecycles
    • Experience with continuous integration and automated testing frameworks
    • Exposure to standards like MISRA for defense, space, or aeronautical applications
    • Experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS and Enterprise Architect
