Job Overview
The post holder will report directly to the Site Director of Finance at Denmark Hill and will be one of two senior finance business partners for the ten Denmark Hill Care groups and seven pan‑Trust Care groups managed from Denmark Hill. The role is an interface between Finance and Operations, providing expert accounting and business knowledge, analytical support and clear presentation of financial and business information to clinical and non‑clinical colleagues to drive sound financial decision‑making.
The post holder will constructively and positively challenge all aspects of the site's financial and business performance. They will be accountable for Trust financial policies, statutory requirements, changes in government policy and for proposing and implementing policy changes where appropriate.
Main Duties of the Job
- Business partnering to care group portfolio:
- Supporting and influencing operational and strategic decisions
- Interpreting, explaining and driving financial performance
- Advising on planning, business case development, external context, benchmarking and commercial opportunities
- Analyzing, advising on and mitigating financial risk in the division
- Challenging behaviour that disregards the Trust's financial principles, policies and procedures
- Developing relationships across the site, especially with care group management teams, to enable effective business partnering
- Advising and supporting Clinical Directors and managers to meet their financial obligations
- Analyzing and agreeing a financial forecast at detail and summary levels, incorporating all actions across care groups
- Lead the monthly review of care group financial performance at all levels, making recommendations to the Site Director of Finance to meet targets and ensuring understanding by the Site Executive
Detailed Responsibilities
CIPs and Transformation
- Work closely with the Trust PMO to identify, cost, analyse, monitor and report on cost improvement plans, savings schemes and transformation projects
- Collaborate with PMO and transformation colleagues to help managers identify, assess and analyse potential and current savings schemes to meet CIP targets
Workforce and Establishment
- Work closely with HR to ensure that the Trust’s establishment control system is adhered to, and that financial positions and planning models reflect ESR information accurately
- Ensure annual budgets and financial plans reflect divisional workforce plans
Income and Activity
- Lead the process of building care group understanding of the links between activity and income and ensuring accurate reporting that aligns with divisional performance, including remedial action where necessary
- Identify all revenue opportunities in the division and provide professional advice on pricing strategies with the Director of Commercial and Contracting
Budgeting and Planning
- Support the production, agreement and implementation of annual budgets across the division, in line with the Trust timetable and procedures, including controls for sign‑off against targets
- Ensure care groups understand and comply with their annual planning and budgeting responsibilities
- Summarise annual budgets and communicate care group performance against budget targets
Person Specification
Qualifications
- CCAB qualified accountant with significant post‑qualification experience in financial leadership roles
- Evidence of recent CPD, including specialist training and experience in NHS finance and national accounting standards
Experience
- Significant post‑qualification experience in strategic finance leadership within a large, complex organisation
- Experience working with multiple stakeholders with conflicting priorities
- Financial modelling and translation of complex data from various systems into clear, comprehensive financial models
Desirable Criteria (Experience)
- Experience and knowledge of the NHS financial and political agenda
Skills and Competencies
Essential Criteria
- Accounting skills including financial analysis, planning and option appraisal
- Highly developed influencing and negotiation skills to overcome significant barriers to acceptance
- Ability to present to a wide range of audiences on complex financial and business issues
Desirable Criteria (Skills)
- Understanding of the changing NHS environment and its implications for service delivery
