We're seeking an experienced professional to lead the design, implementation, and management of this monitoring, which is vital to guiding our investment decisions.
We're conducting extensive monitoring of river flows, groundwater levels, water quality, and ecological indicators, including macroinvertebrates, sediments, habitats, and fish at an unprecedented scale.
This role is focused on ensuring the safe collection of robust and auditable data needed to understand the impact of Wessex Water's assets on the aquatic environment. Your role would ensure that our customers can rest assured that the environmental solutions we implement are cost-effective and environmentally beneficial.

What you'll do
In this role, you will:
- lead by example by championing our safe systems of work to the Environmental Investigations team
- manage a team of Technicians undertaking environmental monitoring throughout the Wessex Water operational area
- be responsible for the preparation, development and continued management of risk assessments, COSHH assessments and method statements necessary to undertake environmental monitoring
- be responsible for the management of the Environmental Investigation team's environmental monitoring equipment by ensuring we have up to date records concerning chains of custody, maintenance, calibration and deployment
- be responsible for the coordination, management and scheduling of environmental monitoring undertaken by the Environmental Investigations team, including obtaining permissions to access land
- be responsible for ensuring that the analytical requirements of the Environment Investigations team can be met through closely liaising with Wessex Water's laboratory and managing short-term resourcing issues
- actively seek opportunities to improve the way we work by identifying efficiencies and promoting new monitoring technological developments
- be responsible for the purchasing of monitoring equipment
- work closely with other members of the team and the wider company to manage contractors and feed into other programmes of work, while also working with other water and sewerage companies working in this area
- be required to provide quality assurance for monitoring equipment and report this to the Environmental Investigations team.
- be responsible for ensuring all monitoring activities adhere to our rigorous safety protocols.
What you'll need
To be successful, you need to have extensive environmental monitoring, health and safety and people management experience.
A good knowledge and understanding of the tools and methods available for water environmental monitoring is preferred.
Due to the nature of the role, it is essential that you can swim and hold a valid driving licence.
Preferred experience includes:
- NESBOSH/EOSH and COSHH certifications or willingness to gain these qualifications in post
- designing and implementing monitoring
- management of a team responsible for technical delivery
- developing and ensuring compliance of risk assessments, COSHH assessments and method statements
- scheduling and management of large and complex monitoring programmes
- the ability to interpret and communicate technical information to all levels
- a good understanding of environmental issues relating to the water environment
- an understanding of environmental legislation.
